View Full Version : SMS delivery reports?

First off: I upgraded last week to the 8700c from a [are you sitting down?] 7230 from TMO. Prior to obtaining the 8700c, my 7230 was amazing. It had survived a two story tap dance on pavement (no joke). I sincerely hope the 8700c is ˝ as durable.

On my 7230, if I went to Options -> SMS, I had an option titled as “Delivery Reports”. With this option ‘On’, it noted a ‘D’ next to the checkmark of sent SMS messages, indicating they had been delivered, just like PIN messages. I was rather upset to find that this option is no longer available on the 8700c. Not sure if this was solely a TMO feature or if this feature has been disabled/removed from the 8700c OS. My 7230 was running OS v4.0.0.185. Thoughts?

Why would I have different options than you on my 8700? Are you on Rogers or Cingular? I have the following options under my SMS menu:

Disable AutoText
Leave Messages On SIM Card
Data Coding
Service Center:
Network To Send Over
Number Of Previous Items

My 8700c has OS v4.1.0.194 .

I have the same options as Sparky and Jordan--no delivery report options. It seems as if there are two different 8700's floating about. In another thread there are people who have the BB Browser and those who don't. I don't have the BB Browser. I wonder if the people w/fewer SMS options are also the people who don't have the BB browser. I think I got a gimpy 8700.

No i think it depends on the sim. I have ATT sim. I don't have a cingular sim to test.

I've got a Cingular SIM. It looks like we need AT&T SIMs to get the Blackberry Browser and SMS delivery confirm. I wonder if Cingular will allow us to make the change?

Incidentally, when I got my 8700 it had no browser on it until the SIM was installed and activated.

I just checked with a Cingular rep. He said there is no way to get an AT&T SIM card as no new AT&T accounts are being started. We are apparently stuck with the Cingular cards and the vastly inferior Cingular browser with sucks in a very big way. I hope Cingular decides to let us have the Blackberry browser so that we can access all websites that require usernames and passwords (such as My Yahoo, Avant Go, etc.). Can you hear me Cingular???

I've got a new Cingular SIM and I have all 3 browsers. I think my browsers appeared after I attached mine to my BES. I have an old ATT SIM laying around I'll throw in my 8700 and see what happens. Stay-tuned!

Still no Delivery Reports for SMS on my 8700c. Any news on this yet? Search revealed nothing.

No news from my end... I tried that old ATT SIM I had and for some reason the network rejected (I think because it wasn't a phone SIM, it was used for a data device only - would that matter?) Anyone else have any luck getting SMS delivery reports to work on the 8700c?

Also, no delivery report options with T-Mobile (on an unlocked 8700c), and a T-Mo 64k SIM

About the Browser Icons, when I 1st got my 8700c, I had no browser icons. I also had no data plan either. Once I got my data plan, the browser icons came up on the home screen. I guess it depends on if you have a data plan or not before the browser icons will show.

BTW, I don't have a delievery report option either.

Interesting, so I guess it is a 8700 os issue and not a SIM card issue... I would like to add this to the list of software issues fixed prior to the next OS release!

I have an 8700C purchased from Amazon and unlocked for use on T-Mobile. It does have the "Delivery Reports" option under Options->SMS

JordanA
02-14-2006, 10:22 AM
Wow, so I guess the unlock process also 'unlocks' the SMS delivery reports option. Does everyone with an unlocked 8700 have this option?

I have an unlocked 8700c on T-Mo (it must be unlocked to be used on T-Mo), latest Cingular software (as it is a Cingular phone) and as I said above, I do NOT have the delivery receipts option.

Wiseass and mas90guru, it appears that the option is available but may not work. Have either of you tried turning this option on?

Check out this thread (Click here) (http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=20500). Its a nationwide network problem... figures.

Its the SIM - I just tested out a few of mine and they all had delivery reports in the menu until they had the sim in and connected to the network... than the option was gone - right after the browsers came up. Take the SIM out, and the option is back.

Im using a 3040 series rogers SIM and software on all three (7100,7290,8700) was CSL 4.1 OS. They all behaved the exact same way - they did not do that with the Rogers OS.

Update! I got it to work.

With the SIM card out, go to options --> SMS
There should be the option for delivery reports, change it to YES
Next, enter your SMS Service Center # - it will be blank (to get it look at the option with the SIM in)
Save, insert SIM, and test - I did this and now get a 'D' over the check on my sent SMS messages!

JordanA

I just tried it and was unable to 'Save' the service center # with the sim out. I could choose the 'Save' option, but when I went to 'Close' it prompted again. When I closed it and reopened the SMS options, the service center # was not there.... Thoughts?

xkon, Thanks for the steps you have outlined above. I got mine to work on the BB8700r.

I followed the instructions - and ran into the same thing JordanA did. You cannot save from the SMS Options menu, however it WILL save the Delivery Reports = ON. The number does not get stored.

However, when reinserting the card, SMS messages do NOT have delivery reports. Just rechecked the Delivery Reports option by taking out SMS card again, and the Delivery reports still = On.

Maybe this doesn't work with Cingular.

I had the same issue but after I hit save, I just pulled out the battery then reinserted SIM and tried sending an sms to a friend of mine and within a few seconds, got a "D" above the check mark on the message I sent...just like a PIN message delivery confirmation. BTW, under the Mail/Messages application general options, I have HIDE SENT MESSAGES set to "No".

Excellent try, but it doesn't seem to be working on Cingular. Has there been any news on when a new OS version will be released?

I've tried the 8700c trick (orange 64k SIM) with no luck. I also have a v551 with Cingular, orange 64k SIM too, and that phone won't get any delivery reports back either. I think Cingular just won't honor them.

Maybe someone out there has a good engineering contact at Cingular who can shed some light on the whole thing. They're not perfect, but with inter-carrier SMS in the US being flakey (not to call anyone out in particular), it's nice to know if something arrived or if it just vanished.

Inter-carrier SMS flakiness is a big time issue, I swear most of my SMSes don't make it to the recipient.

Can someone tell me if there is a trick to removing the SIM card. I can't figure it out and I don't want to break anything.

I find it hard to remove the sim card so I use my woman's tweezers to pull it out.

JordanA

Tweezers work well... I use an IC puller. The card bends up every so slightly while removing it, but that allows quick an easy removal without the fuss.

I've found that using the eraser end of a pencil to slide the SIM card out works very well. On my launch 8700 it's really hard, but I've seen that on some of the newer ones there is a little plastic sheet underneath the sim that seems to help. The eraser hasn't failed me yet, sometimes you gotta work on it though to get the right pressure and just enough to slide it out.

This prevents it from bending when using tweezers.
