Quick question, does anyone know if the 8700's Cingular are selling are locked? I know for a while Cingular sold only unlocked phones, but after the AT&T merger things have changed. If somoene who has one has poped in a sim from a different provider and can let me know I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Someone on these boards either yesterday or today was saying that they stuck a TMobile Sim into an 8700c and it was working great.

Cingular has not shipped unlocked BlackBerrys since they bought AT&T Wireless. All of the Cingular branded 8700c BlackBerrys are coming out SIM card locked.

Some of the early release models (beta testers and the like) are probably unlocked. Early evaluation models usually are. But the 8700c BBs shipping today are locked.

The only thing active under the MEPD Sim Card display is Network Active. Everything else is disabled and I believe that "Network Active" constitutes a "locked" device. I would have to pop the card back into my unlocked 7290 to verify this though.

if you called cingular and asked them to unlock your phone or send you and unlocked phone because of going overseas would they do that?

Nope. Only T-Mobile extends that courtesy to their customers.

meaning that i can call tmobile and ask them to unlock the 8700 or that they are the only service provider that will do that? sorry for the questions.

T-Mobile will unlock T-Mobile phones for T-Mobile customers if you have been a customer of theirs for 3 months, and are in good standing from a credit perspective.

I bought my cingular last week and it was locked. I did call them this past monday and asked for the unlock code. They said it will take 5 days for them to give me the code to unlock it. Hopefully I'll hear from them. I am leaving the country next week and I would like to use my 8700.

NJBlackBerry
12-01-2005, 10:50 PM
You can use the 8700 out of the country without it being unlocked, you just can't put in a foreign SIM card. Be advised that if you DO put in a foreign SIM card, unless that card is from a carrier with BB service, you will lose your e-mail service.

Besides getting a code from Cingular which I have never tried and heard that it is near impossible there is no way to unlock the 8700c

We'll see on that one. Not sure who you spoke to at T-Mobile, but I just sent a request to our T-Mobile corporate team to unlock an 8700c. I think the chances of T-Mobile unlocking a Cingular devices are between slim and none.

From T-Mobile's East Coast Engineering Manager:

"We only have the unlock codes for the devices we lock. You would need to contact Cingular for a code for the 8700."

You will lose the ability to send or receive e-mail - you won't lose any e-mail. I poor choice of words on my part.

I'd be intereseted to know if Cingular will unlock your 8700 - even for the legitimate reason you give them. Them have been completely unreasonably when we've asked for unlock codes in the past. One of the reasons I am a T-Mobile customer.

well heres the thing, i found someone to get me a 8700, hes a cingular cust. and all we did was called cingular and said that we need an unlock code for the 8700. Cingular responded with "what do you need that for, we can only provide that if you submit a request" so we told the rep that it was for oversees travel and said that that is the only way they WOULD unlock it. its basically like help desk, enter ticket, wait for response, initiate action.

NJBlackBerry

Until you actually TRY TO GET IT UNLOCKED. Then, they can't do it.
I have tried so many times... I know someone knows someone who works at Cingular and says he knows they will do it. But just try it.

I called the International Department and indicated I needed to travel overseas and would like to use a prepaid SIM card. I happened to get a very nice person and she asked if I paid full price and I indicated yes; I paid $399. I faxed her a letter stating my reason and a copy of the receipt. 2 days later I received an email indicating I would receive an unlock code in 5 days. Today I got an email with the unlock code and instructions and it worked. I will experiment with my T-mobile SIM and let you know how it goes. I have always used the T-Mobile Blackberry Service for Internet based email and it is superior to the Cingular Service (I am not referring to BES). I just switched to Cingular because I wanted the EDGE and the new 8700c. Will post a followup.

Unlockers will not give you another code if you loose or replace your BB. They usualy have to pay to get these codes so it's a 1 shot deal. This I do know. Besides people would cliam they lost or replaced there bb to try to get a free code etc.

I was just on gsmunlocker's site. They clearly state they will unlock only AT&T and T-Mobile. But Cingular is the only 8700 vendor in the US. So, if they are unlocking 8700c BlackBerrys, doesn't that contradict with the statement that they only unlock AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile. I would gladly (well, not gladly) pay them the $129 but I don't want to get ripped off.

This is interesting because I had a similar experience with my previous phone, a Motorola V551, which I wanted to get unlocked. I had paid full price for the phone and I had to fax them a copy of the receipt proving it. A few days later I was emailed an unlock code. I believe that paying full retail had something to do with me being able to get an unlock code.

when your phone is unlocked it increases your resale value first of all, second it will provide you access to any network that is GSM i.e.: tmobile, cingular, att, rogers, etc.
gives you lots more flexibility in networks, carriers, plan options

The ability to use an AT&T SIM in an 8700c doesn't mean it's unlocked. The 8700c's are able to use both orange and blue SIM's. The only way to tell if your 8700c is locked is to use another carrier's SIM or to go to SIM Properties and type in MEPD. If it says that the network lock is active then it's locked.

Question - how exactly do you do that. I see the SIM card under advanced options in the options area. If I clicl the track wheel my choices are edit SIM phone number, change PIN2 code, enable security and close.

In am able to switch from automatic to manual in the network area and scan and then change carriers - I thought that meant it was unlocked.

NJBlackBerry

Locked means you can not use a different carrier's SIM card in it. It has nothing to do with the network selection. Network selection comes into play if you travel overseas, and have a choice of carriers to lock on to. You can either "automatically" grab one, or manually select one.

You need to type M E P D while in the advanced options menu. The menu will then show youif the servies are locked/unlocked

I just ordered my 8700, so I'm curious to see if mine is locked. I just tryed MEPD in the Options>SIM card and "Personalization: with a list of SIM, Network, Network Subset, Service Provider, Corporate" all have "Disabled" next to them. Does that mean it is unlocked? Is there any one source to find all the "hack" codes to really dig up the nitty gritty details and all "repair guy" codes?

International wouldn't unlock mine as it was discounted or new or some other reason. While free would have been nice, I really didn't feel like spending additional time on the phone with Cingular.

If you do decide to use gsmps, search Fatwallet's Hot Deals forum for the Paypal 10% discount.

Just for the heck of it, since everybody is getting their phones unlocked 8-) , i requested from international business care at 9am this morning the unlock code for my 8700. They said that it would take anywhere from 48hrs to 2 weeks. Guess what, I just got the code via email, and the best part, for free!!!

They would not unlock mine because we are on the ATT blue side. I swear this Cingular/ATT is the worst company I have every dealt with in my life. I refuse to switch to them. Everytime I get someone on the phone I feel like they have no idea what they are doing.

1) the phone has to be active for at least 3 months
2) the phone must show up as "listed on the account"

So no, wasn't able to get it unlocked. Did you all go through this process by any chance?

Well the only thing that the rep checked was if I was a customer for at least three months, and asked me for the phone's imei. He also said that he needed to check the account to make sure i had at least the international roaming feature(the free one) he said that that was one of the requirements in order to request the unlock code. He never said anything about the phone being "listed on the account". At least he did not mention anything in that regard.

WOW!!

You guys are right. One call to the interenational customer service and after giving phone number and IMEI I had the instructions emailed to me in 15 minutes (a record only beaten by Mark in getting the PocketDay Activation Codes) It was so painless I could not believe i was dealing with Cingular. One thing he did say was that I did have my blackberry account over three months. Since I've heard something similar from the TMO people maybe it was just a matter for the Cingular people to get the right department.

Kudos to NoPesos and hyperevo8 as well as anyone else I missed. This euphoria will carry me into the weekend.

I dont see why they would have trouble unlocking it dude, the only one who could have locked it in the first place is Cingular, and they are the ones who should unlock it for you... i know from my 7100 that they are very reluctant, even more than any other phone, but they can do it.

The guy that has access to the Cingular unlock codes tried mine twice and came back with nothing. He is able to get all the ones from Cing unlocked. I think RIM locks them for Cingular and sends the codes to Cingular. I don't think RIM sent the codes for the free ones they sent out from the launch party. So far no one has been able to get their "black leather box" unit from RIM unlocked.

NJB,
To reduce confusion, maybe we should specify whether the 8700c's in question are from the launch event or not. Non-launch event 8700c's have been unlocked successfully. Launch event 8700c's have not, to my knowledge, been unlocked.

I just talked to Cingular International support, they were helpful and even offered to correct a international roaming plan that was setup wrong. The guy said the instructions and unlock code would be sent to me with in 5 days. Since it was the weekend, it wouldn't be right away-I'll let you know how it goes when I get a response.

New Question: Once it is unlocked, if I type "M E P D" while viewing the Settings>Options>Advanced Options>SIM page, I should see all DISABLED items for each status line? And will that then show me MANUAL or AUTOMATIC selection of network in the Settings>Options>Network control page? What allows me to select a network when roaming internatioanally with an unlocked 8700 or 7290? Thanks in advance!

gotta question about Rogers (8700r). would i have to go through the process of securing the unlock code from the carrier, similar to what everyone's done here with cingular? Roger's isn't overly helpful in providing unlock codes, so i'm holding my breath for Bongo Wireless.

Does anyone else have any possible suggestions?!

Ok, just got some great service from Cingular International Customer service. I got an email from the "Cingular Unlock Team" after my first request for the unlock code that said, "we can not provide the code while you still owe money on the account" or something to that effect. In fact, it was my normal bill that is due on the 20th of the month and is on auto pay. So, I called Intl customer care back and told this nice lady the story and for my trouble, she re issued the unlock request and gave me the current unlock directions over the phone with a code she said "might or might not work" but she would still keep the re-request in to Cingular. So, I tryed the directions and code and it worked! I have all "DISABLED" listed on my SIM card page after typing MEPD. I don't know if the code is unique to my IMEI, maybe you all have some leads on that? Is the code the same for everyone or unique?

I have heard about a few people who run grey market stores for cell phones that are working on unlocking the 8700r but nobody has seem to do it yet. I betting Kevin and his team @<hidden> Bongo will do it first but other than that not much else can be done. If you want the unlock code from Rogers then be prepared to cough up the big bucks.

Yeah I decided at the end of the day to sell mine (on ebay now) b/c I don't want to pay $130 to unlock it. Plus, I've been with TMo for so long (early Voicestream days) and have such a huge plan that they always give me subsidy pricing anyway - so if/when they offer the proper 8700t (hopefully in BLACKberry), I may buy one then. May wind up paying more than $130 but so be it.

Yes this is very true. I have called them 4 times and they will not give it out. It was ATT policy never to give them out. And to think Cingular is switching back to ATT. I hope it is just the name and not the policys.

I don't understand why this is the case. It is a Cingular phone, not an AT&T one, so they will have the code for it. If it is just policy then that's a different story. I've asked my company to see if they can sort it out.

I emailed GSMPONESOURCE and they say they can unlock it fine.

I was able to call the International Support line for Cingular and they said they could unlock my phone. While they were at it I asked them to unlock my old phone as well.

If I want to get an 8700c on T-Mobile, do I just need to go to T-Mobile, get a basic phone (any special features?, one of the free ones?) and sign up for a contract with them, then get an unlock 8700c and move the SIM over? That simple?

if you have an unlocked bb yes it is that simple(of course you have to activate bb data plan on t-mobile if you want the feature but that is no problem at all)

unlocked bb will work with any sim (gsm company) in the world.

i wouldnt go and buy a phone from t-mobile you can just buy the sim card and put it in your unlocked bb, call em up and activate the service you want.
