Hi,
We are looking at encrypting our Verizon Blackberry Curve 8330 and wanted to see what are the pros and cons. I also wanted to see what issues people have had supporting the devices after encrypting.
Thanks.

Encrypting what specifically?
The device OS and data traffic on RIM's infrastructure are already encrypted.
Are you looking to encrypt media card contents, user PIM data, peer-to-peer messaging, etc?
Is this a BES environment?

Hi, I'm asking about encrypting emails, calendar, contacts etc that reside on the Blackberry device. Is that Content Protection?
Thanks.

Simply enabling a security password for each device avails the user of RIM's legendary security. They use AES 256 last I heard.

There is a good explanation of content protection here: http://www.blackberryforums.com/bes-admin-corner/113227-enable-content-protection-through-policy.html#post801093
though it is slanted towards BES IT Policy settings.

Putting in a strong password does provide robust protection, probably sufficient for most people, but that alone does not encrypt content. Some one who is able to dump the memory (a very high bar to hurdle) would be able to read email, contacts, most application settings, etc.

BTW while communications between the device and BES are always encrypted, between the device and BIS they are not encrypted (except for GSM encryption over the air). The latest material I've seen from RIM is rather specific on this point.

That's only if content protection is enabled, with the strongest setting I Beleive, really slows down the device,

I started using a product from gomycell - fully encrypted sms messaging. The interface is no frills and the cluttered inbox is a little annoying, but it is definitely secure and works on more than just BB - my friend on ATT has a nokia...
