View Full Version : 7130e tether speed

I use to have Verizon EVDO access via a PCMCIA card in my laptop, I would usually get ~700kbps at starbucks in Burlington Ma. With the tethered 7130e, the first day I got ~500kbps, not bad at all. But since then its been super weird. I will connect and get ~3kbps (yes, THREE) with a spike every couple of minutes to ~600k. Sometimes I wills start with a spike, then drop down and have the every few minute spike. When I do a test device I get ~90% signal strength and 100% battery.

I cant go back to the PCMCIA card for testing as the account has been shut off. But like I said, the exact same location gave me ~700kbps with the PCMCIA card.

Any ideas?
On the PCMCIA card I used to "activate" it periodically to get the latest tower locations (thats what I was told it did, <shrug>), is there a similar action I need to take on the 7130e to do a network update?

On verizon devices, *228 then select option 2 will update the roaming capabilities/towers. Never hurts to try.

I am tethered right now (for lack of a better word :) ) and my download speed is showing max of 787kbps. It downloads in fits and bursts. Nothing for a few seconds, then a few hundred kbps. Its not as bad as it was, and is in fact bearable.

HOWEVER, I am at a differant coffee shop today... So I dont know if it was the activation or the new location that fixed the problem. BUT, its good to know that its capable of working. :D

Thanks again for the info.

I tried teathering using the VZAccess software supplied and had the same problems with the speed dropping to almost zero and also had to shut off my firewall software to make it work at all. I have since quit using the VZAccess and setup Windows DialUp Networking which resulted in more consistant speeds and it works fine with the firewall. My speeds are in the 450K range from home using DSLReports. I haven't tried it anywhere else yet.

Wery cool.
I will have to try using Windows Dial Up networking instead, see if that helps.

Any how-to links to using Dial Up Networking with my 7130e would be appreciated...

Seems complicated. Here's the Support Doc direct from Blackberry for the 7130e:

Just remember that once you have it setup you'll have to fire up the Desktop Manager to establish a connection with the handheld and then fire up DUN to connect. Two icons on your desktop should have you off and running.

Good luck!

actually, the blackberry website doc was wrong. It does work, but the walk through doesnt work. I would suggest the blackberryforums link. Again, both work, its just that the blackberry doc requires you to think. :D

I have been at the burlington coffee shop for about an hour now using the windows dial up networking and its working nicely. Thanks for the help.

I would like to point out that it works without running the blackberry desktop manager, rather I run the blackberry device manager. Its easier to run, maybe it was a mistake in the doc? dunno, but its easier to run the device manager.

thanks again.

Anyone know if the tethering works via bluetooth on the 7130e. My LG VX9300 can do DUN with my laptop via bluetooth
