How do you exactly put a PDF file on your phone? I tried to drag & drop into the "document" folder through my laptop, but I can't find a document file on the phone. I also can't send it using email because of the size limitation.

Make sure you are looking in on the SD card, not internal memory.
It (the documents folder) should be on the media card.

Also, you must disconnect the phone from the laptop to see the card.

From my home screen, shouldn't I be able to access it, from like the "Files" icon or something?
What I'm trying to do is have a contract available for viewing on this phone, in pdf format.

No, to access it, you need to go media - menu - explore and then find the location its in, and then the document itself.
It also wont be viewable without a pdf reader, which costs money, as there arent any free ones.

What about the one that came with this 8900, "Word To Go". Isn't it supposed to be able to read things like that?

WordToGo doesn't read PDF files.
PDFtoGo does, it comes with the premium version of DocumentsToGo.

There is also mobipocket reader that converts PDF to readable format. Its free but some work needed to have it to work. Search for mobipocket reader
Large PDF files are hard to read.
