Getting data to a 8830 in Australia

So I'm roaming in Australia on a friend's Telus 8830 and a Virgin Mobile SIM. Works great except that I don't know if I can get data or whether I'm missing a setting that will allow the phone to get data. I have ativated data, but the ephone tells me that there is no data connection when I open the browser.

Does anyone know? ...I assume that at best it would be low speed data...

I'd be using it mainly to PIN friends and family and the odd email...

You have a data plan, or a blackberry data plan?
