I'm on a 7750 CDMA blackberry, and from reading here, it looks like I can't use mobile TCP/IP (What the hell!), due to my employ, i'm provided the unit, so I can't pick my provider.

What solutions are there to use IRC and items like that on my unit?

Please search, but some options include 4.0 OS, BWC, BES (external or corporate).

See "Hosted BES" service in my BlackBerry FAQ. You can get IRC running (and Verichat MSN/ICQ/AIM/Yahoo and telnet/SSH), for an additional $10-$25 USD per month.

I'm on a bes now with work, so what do I have to do from here? I have www via internet browser but all the other software I've tried claims protocol not found.

Just to add another thing, in verichat there is two options, I either get protocol not found, or if I enable mds I get no service book found.

Get the network administrator to turn on MDS (Mobile Data Service) on your BES.

Good luck..... Not even CLOSE to my control.

I guess you're dead in the water, short of buying your own BlackBerry and using your own hosted BES :(

Unless MDS is already enabled on your BES, and it's simply a configuration problem...

What type of configuration problems could cause this?

Not to offend anyone, but if your BB is on a BES server, I would have to guess that it's a company device. The fact that the BES admin won't enable MDS most likely means they don't want you running third party TCP/IP apps, maybe for security reasons...

I would guess that if you do get something like that going, and work finds out you may not only be out of the BB, but out of a job as well. It's literally 2 clicks to enable MDS on the server, 2 clicks to enable MDS for a user.

I'm sure if the company wanted you to have this access, they would let you have this access.

Obviously it's up to you in the end, but I wouldn't be risking my job for IRC on a BB.

And to top it all off, I don't even know your situation, so if I am wrong, I apologize.

Oh... and one more thing... maybe if we consider the path your IRC traffic would take to get to the IRC server, we might find there is a firewall between your BES server and the internet that might be blocking the whole port 666X range.
