Missing text field disappears from bottom of SMS screen

Hi,
Sometimes in the SMS text screen ("Conversation style=bubbles") I can see the conversation list but the text field at the bottom disappears. This happens to specific contacts but not others, and after a while resets itself. It may have something to do with the voice mail notification text (I'm on Verizon) because usually that's what I see as the last conversation.

I'm on the Blackberry Tour 9630 on Verizon. OS version is 5.0.0.591.

Any help is appreciated! I don't even know where to start...
