how to verify stolen or lost BB

Somone at my job is selling a Blackberry 9700, and before i buy it, i want to make sure the blackberry is not listed as stolen or lost. How can i make sure its a legit blackberry ??

From the FAQ. Although it says buying a used BB from eBAY, it applies to buying any used BB.
