Software For BlackBerry® Bold 9780 smartphone
BlackBerry Handheld Software v6.0.0.1965 (Multilangauge)
This will install to any carrier's 9780 by following the directions below:

Package Version: 6.0.0.1965, Consisting of:

Applications: 6.0.0.461
Software Platform: 6.5.0.147
File name: 9780jAsia_PBr6.0.0_rel1965_PL6.5.0.147_A6.0.0.461_Bharti_Airtel_Limited.exe
File size: 164.21MB Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.
Download the OS file here: https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=BD4C9AB730F5513206B999EC0D90D1FB

Instructions for installing on the 9780:
1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml." Vista/Win7 users: In the apploader folder, simply click on "Compatibility files" to see the actual Vendor.xml file. Once you've got that - simply delete the vendor.xml file there (even if you've deleted or think you've deleted it in the folder previously) and voila, it will allow you to update to the newly installed OS!
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process may take up to 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a black "BlackBerry" screen with a status bar for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again, and it should load the OS to the device.

You'd probably need to wait until a multi-language version becomes available.

The link works well and downloads fine. Since you didn't state any error you're having, it is difficult to offer any solutions other than to just try again.

Seems to be working fine for me so far. DL'd on the 13th and have had no major issues. Battery life seems to be pretty good compared to the last OS release, so no complaints from me.

I just 'upgraded' from .448 and I lost my entire AutoText or Word Substitution or whatever you call it. I see several threads where people when from 5.x to 6 and they had the same problem, but to go from 6.x to 6.y and having the same problem is rediculous!!! I've lost all my custom words, probably close to 200 :(

Very unhappy with this release (n)

I would think if you had a backup that you have done yourself you may get them back that way

I have just got my Bold 9780 last week by becoming Windmobile, Canada customer. I would like to install Bengali Font on my Bold 9780 to read Bengali newspapers as well as mails written in Bengali. Can someone help me on this?

I just updated to this OS b/c of a Bluetooth issue with a prior version. All appears well so far, with exception of Visual Voicemail. I saw in the 9700 thread for this sw version that for some reason it was left out, and that there were instructions in the Beta thread on how to add it back it. I searched and couldn't find any info. Does anyone have an hints? Thanks!

Having used this for a few days now, I've found the browser to be quite laggy and slow. Something really not quite right. IMHO I say skip this version

Laggy and slow browser - gee...it's not like any BB actually has a browser that is worth a damn. Every release, every BB, has a garbage browser, slow, impossible to read or navigate...

While you can't beat a BB for e-mail and several other features, you can't say that about their browsers...RIM really does suck when it comes to browsing. Nothing compares to an iPHONE for browsing...then you have Android and then you have Windows Mobile - then at the very bottom of the pile, you have RIM.

The browser in this release is exactly the same as the previous and even later releases...

What really sucks, is the inability to backup and restore the custom words and word substitution collections. It's been this way for months now, with not even a clue on the RIM site as to when that'll be fixed.

More and more, I'm becoming less and less enchanted with any of RIM's product offers these days.

Steve, you're probably right, but my comparison's are relative to previous BlackBerry OS releases. With some of the glitches I'm seeing, and the lack of app compatibility with OS6, I'm really longing for my old 9700 more and more. The only true upgrade with the 9780 is the camera. RIM wake up!!!

...and you'd be dead wrong about that - it's a known issue that there's no backup for that, and no working restore either. Before recommending to others, you really should verify - instead of just posting solutions that are know NOT to work. There's a plethora of info about this, including KB's on the RIM site, which state that there's no known workaround at this time.

Is there a way of finding out what fixes were made ? Blackberry site ? Other ones ?

I just found a bug in this (otherwise excellent) release: in the message inbox, if I press "C",instead of composing a new message, as it did in the previous release, it opens up the Search box. Is it a wanted change ?

I'm just a bit confused. Do currently have .461 on your device, and if so why would you want to update it? And if your asking why the device may be telling you there's a lower version available, it's probably your carrier's latest version, which in many instances will be a lower version of the OS. Bottom line, if you're not having problems then just ignore it.

installed 461 and looks like everything works as intended and no issues so far. Except all the settings were gone.

For those who installed the ringtones from 5.xx version make sure you copy the file in java folder when installing otherwise your 5.xx ringtones will not be there and it will set to defaults.
I am copying mine now. lesson learned!!

1st ?
Does 'Loader' backup the currently installed OS on the device along with the user data, or does it only do the data; if only the user data how can I backup the OS so that I can revert back to it if required/desired?

2nd ?
Is it safe to install an OS from the 9700 on the 9780 model, or will this brick the device?

Thanks in advance for answers to both questions!

1. It does not backup the OS, you would need to get it from the Internet if needed.

2. No that doesn't work at all. The OS must exactly match the BB model number.

Thanks Freakinvibe, where can I find the earliest OS for the 9780? I looked on the 'BETA YOU THAN ME' area on this forum but can only find two OS's for the 9780 and they are both OS6, I need to temporaraly install OS5; what would happen if I tried to install OS5.x from the 9700?

In a nutshell, I am trying to change the active PIN on Blackberry Redirector, but it does not recognise my 9780, I had a 9800 (Torch) running OS6 and it worked fine with that, but it wont detect the PIN on my new BOLD and someone suggested installing OS5 as it may be the newer OS build that is preventing Redirector from changing the active device.

My only other option is if someone knows how/where I can manually change the active device from Redirector.

This does not work. The 9780 was delivered with OS6 from the beginning, there is no OS5 for this device.
I am trying to change the active PIN on Blackberry Redirector
How exactly are you trying to do that? You don't need an old OS to activate your 9780, the latest OS6 will activate fine. Are you using Desktop Manager?

You have probably downloaded the wrong os. As you have a 9700, you should download an OS for 9700 not for 9780.
