Hey guys, does anyone know of an app OR website to test 3G speeds on a Blackberry Bold 9700? I've downloaded a 99 cent app on BB app world but it shows 400kbps when my bro's iphone shows 3,000kbps so this app is no good. Thanks everyone!

Speed depends on many different factors such as the connection, the device, device memory and processor, your distance to the tower, tower congestion, and a few more. Most of these are outside your control.

On 3G, you should average about 400 to 900 kbps with a max of about 3.6 mbps on the AT&T 3G network. 4G should get you up to 7.2 mbps in most areas where it is available, slightly higher in some.

A test of two different devices is only valid if you are side by side, running the same test via the same network. Otherwise, it is like comparing apples to orange.

Thanks for the info. However, both devices were running side by side...

Also remember that a BB is not an iPhone.

Were you hitting the exact same site and on the same network using the same speed test?

Same network but different speed test. The speed test apps for blackberry are extremely limited. However, the iPhone shows speeds over 3,000kbps and the BB shows speeds of 400kbps. Both are on 3G, same network same location....this can't be normal at all.. I think it may be something wrong with the app I am using for the blackberry.

If the iphone was hitting a proxy, then that would explain it.

However, the numbers are within the range. You really cannot compare a BB and an iPhone. Big difference in devices, processor, memory, etc.

Did you try searching via Google? lots of hits. Some are below.

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test (http://www.speedtest.net/index.php?nojs=1)

Cell phone internet speed test (kinda Fun) - Guru3D.com Forums (http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=288666)

speedtest.net requires flash, which the blackberry does not have. dsl reports does not work on blackberry. very few mobile speed test websites work with Blackberry. very unfortunate.

2wire.com has a speed test.

This speed test is way off. My computer shows the results to be 3-4 mbps lower than it actually is. Phone shows 2.8mbps...not sure if that is accurate?

I guess the question now is, how do you know it is not accurate? There are a lot of factors affecting the speed and advertised rates are only best estimates, usually in a perfect environment, not real world, day to day.
