I have just recieved my new 8700 this morning. Whilst I am extremely excited by the new device .... I was very disappointed to see that it came with a cheap cloth case. I have had a 7290 before which has the best hard plastic clip that makes it almost impossible for the device to fall out... I would have hoped the 8700 would have had something similar!

Does anyone know if these can be bought as an optional extra for the 8700g? My 7290 has a couple of holes on the back where the plastic grips into... the fact that the 8700 doesn't have this makes me believe that this may not be possible??

As a parting note... I have also had a 7100 before which also has a cloth case - after a few months, the case failed to grip the device correctly which resulted in it falling out whenever a run to catch my train!

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

The search function is your friends. There are several threads already that discuss optional cases for the 8700 - many with reviews and pretty pictures!

Did I read your post correctly to say that your 8700 came with a case other than a hard plastic case like this:

http://www.shopblackberry.com/_blackberryaccessories/cgi-bin/pd.cgi?frompage=category_by_model&page=product_detail&fromcategory=BlackBerry+8700c&category=BlackBerry+8700c&pid=F2222UG68PH9XTHL7QG

That is the standard that ships with it, did you get a cloth case?

If you want the plastic Holder you can buy it right there but this is the first time I have heard of anything other than that plastic holder shipping with the 8700.

This is the thread that the other poster discussed, it even has a great review by a member named lgreenberg:

Not to mention that the plastic holder is also nicknamed "launching device" if you get my drift....

What ships with the device, depends on the carrier. E.g. in Germany T-Mobile and Vodafone are both shipping their devices with a cloth case.

I did not know that, my lesson for the day.(y)

At least the guy now has a place to buy what he wants- the RIM OEM plastic piece of junk that broke within a month for me.(n)
I liked the way it worked but it broke quick and they did not offer a different holster until last week and you still can't buy it direct from RIM till the 21st.

That is what the RIM website lists it as but I think they may have taken truth in marketing a little too far.

Am I the only person who's irritated by the RIM plastic holster pressing the p and q buttons when the phone's in there? Drains the battery superfast and, if you're dumb enough to have forgotten to lock the keys, speed dials p or q (if you're dumb enough to have set p and q speed -dials...and I am).

I'd love to know if I'm doing something wrong.

You may want to check out your holster. when it is in the holster, the phone is supposed to be in sleep mode. Not be able to do anything except receive phone calls and emails and sms

You're putting it in backwards! The screen faces INWARD when in the holster...

Actually, discretion is the better part of valor, as moderators you guys porbably have some sort of atomic button that will vanquish me from the forums. I'm outta here - you guys go to it.

Thank you all for all the feedback.

The plastic clip at

http://www.shopblackberry.com/_blackberryaccessories/cgi-bin/go.cgi/webstore/product_detail?cart_adjust=a1,F2222UG68PH9XTHL7QG&frompage=product_detail&fromcategory=&pid=F2222UG68PH9XTHL7QG

is EXACTLY what I was hoping for when I bought my device..... does anyone know if this clip (which is for the 8700c) will work with the 8700g?

The reason I ask this is that my 7290 distinctly has 2 holes on the back of it where the clip must secure into.... my 8700g has nothing. So just wondering if they have redesigned how the device is secured into the clip on an 8700?

Thanks

The 8700c clip will not work with the 8700g, one of my clients just tried it and is very pissed at me, like its my fault...he hates the pouch holster as do I...if anyone knows of an OEM plastic RIM holster for 8700g by all means let me know

I cannot tell you where to get one if they are different from the 8700C but I can tell you that the 8700C has a small area on the sides that the holder's clips grab. My little black clip on the holster is what broke off rendering the holster useless.

I am not familiar with the 8700g and the differnces between it and the 8700c but wanted to let you know about the 8700c design and how it interacts with the holster.

Here is a pic of the clip area from a picture I stole from another thread:

Here is the side of the 8700c, does the 8700g have these indents on the side?

It does, but since the actual device casing is molded a little differently it does not fit in an 8700c plastic holster. Same idea just a little difference hardware so it doesnt't lock right

The G has a slightly different profile (edge-wise). The 8700c clip isn't to be used. The upcoming TMO 8700 will ship with the different clip.

Did you test it your self? I was hoping to use the plastic holster with my 8700g because I don't really like the hydromfom case that much.

We've already broke the side clips off of FIVE cases... and its hard to find replacement cases in stock! Never had problems with the 72xx cases.
