View Full Version : 8700c housing available yet?

I dropped my 8700c last night, unfortunately. While it still works, it landed first on a corner, then face down. There's a nice big, deep scratch on the corner (near the power button) and on part of the screen. The black coating is peeling away near the scratches.

Promobility has housings and parts for every other BB, but not a thing for the 8700. Does anyone know of any other sources? Does Cingular by any chance have a "special" parts department?

I can get a totally new device without service for about $450, but can't bring myself to do it just for a cosmetic issue. And as for the warranty, I'm not worried about voiding it by doing some surgery.

Thanks.

See about a broken screen one for parts maybe on ebay or maybe one of those dummy units that you can get on ebay for 50 or less, here is three of them:

Has anyone had any experience with the dummy units to see if they are really usable for parts? I've seen some for other phones that just are one or two big pieces of plastic, and not really like what a functioning phone would be.

Dummy units DO NOT work.

My T-Mobile rep tried it on his 8700 when he cracked his screen, and the screw holes don't match up. He ended up shipping to RIM for repair. Cost about $200.

Dummy units are NOT OEM quality or stock replacement parts phone.
The plastic shells of dummys are extremely cheap and much lighter than the real thing.

Do not buy a dummy phone for that reason or you will be jipped!

mine is cracked too..everyone i contacted said at least 3 months for parts to become available...i wish i could get a little bit more out of a new one on ebay, cingular said they'd send me a new one for 210

I opened up a TSupport case just to see what RIM's take is on the whole thing. They said all they can do is do an out-of-warranty repair for $190, or a out-of-warranty exchange for $230. Not exactly sure what the exchange is about (new unit?), but $190 to replace a $10 housing is pretty bogus.

I guess I'll live with it and see how the spare parts look in the next couple of months.

All I'll say is, you gotta pay to play.

The card door knocked mine out of my hands and hockey pucked it across the parking lot right outside the Cingular store 2 days after I bought it (get this) going to see if they had a leather case in for it yet! The Reps stood there in shock because they saw it all. I was sick. Brand new and worked perfect but now ugly! Couldn't even show it off anymore. I bought a new one for like $210 and just kept the guts to the other one. It's very easy to take apart and put back together. I also bought an Invisible Shield and put it on to make sure that this doesn't happen again. Works and looks great!

The BlackBerry Repair Shop has been in discussion with RIM for a few weeks and will have 8700 series housings available soon as per the owner and their homepage. Promobility told me they wouldn't have them available for 6 months.

As soon as BBRS has one available I will grab one and then sell the 8700 on eBay or wherever to recoup what I've spent. So you can either do the same thing or just wait it out until one's available for purchase. There is a link on their homepage to get on the waiting list to be notified.

Hope this helps.

Just in case anyone else wants the contact info.

I don't have any experience with this group, I just wanted more information about them.

(I couldn't post a link, not enough posts myself, apparently)

The prices from both BB Repair Shop and Promobility are rip-offs. To pay 40% of what the device cost to get rid of some scratches -- absurd. I'd sooner wait for a new model, or bite the bullet and buy a whole new BB (and get the wobbly keyboard problem fixed, which a new housing still won't do).

Even the replacement LCD prices are too high. The housing shouldn't be more than $50 and a combined housing+LCD kit shouldn't be more than about $120.

I received my replacement 8700c front housing from ProMobility a few days ago, and it was absolutely flawless. Replacing it was a snap, and it's as good as new. I dealt with Lucy at ProMobility, and couldn't have asked for a better rep. I had asked about scratches, etc, and she said she'd be sure to send me one in "like new" condition. She did. No complaints here, and though it was $40, it was worth it.
