I recently got a 8700c Blackberry, apparently the voice reception is quite bad. I also cannot play .wav files on my BB!..I have read many posts in this forum and all say that cingular has not realeased a hot fix or new os for BB 4.1! from what i have read that the new OS will fix the voice quality as well as allow .wav files to be played!..
any comments?

Where, per chance, did you read that the new OS would allow .wav files to be played?

I think he meant you can use your 8700 while riding a "wav"e.

the base Cingular 4.1 release left out a lot of functionality that is found in other OS versions. if you mean play .wav files from a BES, no. if you mean otherwise, it should.

BB Tech support had also mentioned that the new OS or hot fix would allow ".wav" files to be played! but i see none being released soon..

For what it's worth, I put 4.1.0.286 on my 8700c and can now use wav files as ringtones.

Hope this helps.

NJBlackBerry

It's not a hotfix. It's a new version of the handheld OS

Hong Kong CSL is 4.1.0.286

Well, I have Cingular and i don't see 4.1.0.286 on the software download page for Cingular!! what if i download and install the OS from Hong Kong CSL any ramifications?

Wirelessly posted (8700c: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

So this solves the voicemail in a .wav file problem.

has anyone installed the 4.1.0.286 on cingular BB

NJBlackBerry

Only most of the people on this board.

There is a .300 or .310 somewhere around. I am running .286 from T-Mobile.

Cingular has been a bit behind in releasing updates. And T-Mobile, for obvious reasons, does not have a version posted.

kuttakamina

so will .286 or .300 or .310 installed on cingular BB work?

I too would like to know if this fixes the problem? Will try it out Monday if nobody knows.

I believe it allows you to play WAV files as ringtones. I am not sure if it fixes the "voicemail WAV file" dilemma.

kuttakamina

You can install any of those versions and save wav files as ringtones. I don't know about voicemail.wav as I don't have access to that service.

Hope this helps.

To me, that is a service, and I don't have access to a voice mail system that sends voicemail as wav files.

I do, for caller identification Voice announcement ringtones. It allows me to generate them directly from my BB, no need to convert from wav to MP3 and they sound just as good.

Hope this helps.

does it fix the voice mail .wav issue?
if you're talking about the delivery of .wav files through a BES to your handheld, its an issue with the attachment processing on the BES and won't be resolved, most likely, until BES 4.1 SP1.

kuttakamina

so it is nothing to do with BB, i get a unrecognized document format error!

kuttakamina
04-10-2006, 02:28 PM
Earlier I called Blackberry support and they said that I could download BES 4.1 SP1, I searched their website and to my surprise there was no 4.1 SP1 available!! I called them again and i was informed that the information given to me was wrong! Currently, there is no BES 4.1 SP1 available..

If you're using MS exchange and have Unified Messaging (voicemail .wav file attachments) use the browser on your BB and go to the Outlook Web Access for your exchange server. You can listen to the .wav file attachements that way

I tried using my browser to open my .wav file and it did not work. I could not play the .wav attachment (Although, It did open up an Audio Player - VoiceMessage screen)

Once you get to the download page, the reference is an 8700g not 8700c.

They're the same device. And it's not 8700c because CSL doesn't sell -c, they sell -g.

I just got the 8700c last week for cingular and the reception is choppy. This is on the Edge network with 4/5 bars. What is the deal. Does the software OS upgrade fix this? It seems this is a handset issue. I already exhanged a handset in and changed the 3G sim card. Any advice? Anyone else having issues with the 8700c reception from Cingular. Had no problems with Verizon. Please help or I will have to switch to another carrier. Any advice?

You have 4 out of 5 bars? That's great, what's the problem? It all depends on how close to a tower you are. Why would you switch for not having all 5 bars all the time? That's not an EDGE issue, it's a tower location issue. If I had 4 bars all day long I'd be a happy customer!

I think you are missing my point. Even with 4/5 bars in most cases, the reception is choppy. The reception is in and out. Which leads me to believe that it is a handset issue. I have to ask people to repeat themselves as every couple words is static.

If you think it's the handset, get a new phone. Why switch carriers? My 8700c has worked spledidly, but I do run an updated OS on it. I'd recommend Stinsonddog's tips. His upgrade instructions are excellent!

The audio on the current Cingular OS (4.1.0.194) is OK, and does support .WAV files. See the BlackBerry Wireless Handheld
Version 4.1 User's Guide (http://www.blackberry.com/knowledgecenterpublic/livelink.exe/fetch/2000/8067/645045/8533/1140089/1140090/BlackBerry_8700_-_User_Guide.pdf?nodeid=1140258&vernum=0) for details.

Later versions of the OS improve sound slightly (read make it louder!), and BlueTooth headsets with good noise cancellation help a LOT, even with the Cingular OS/

Hi Jerry, When you say the "does support .WAV files", does that mean if you receive an email with a .wav attachment, you can open that attachment and listen to it on your BB?

Thanks!

Wave (.WAV) files are definitely supported as ring tones. Apparently you have to have "MMS" service for .WAV file attachment support. From the BlackBerry manual (link above):With an MMS-compatible number, you can send and receive multimedia message service (MMS) messages. An MMS-compatible number is a phone number that your service provider enables for MMS.

If your service provider supports MMS, you can send MMS messages that contain .jpg, .gif, .wbmp, .png, .smil, .midi, .wav, .mp3, .vcf (vCardŽ), or .vcs (vCalendarŽ) content and receive MMS messages that contain .jpg, .gif, .wbmp, .png, .midi, .wav, .mp3, .txt, .vcf, .vcs, .amr or .smil content.
