Hi,

we released a Public Beta (http://www.79bmedia.de/~knoppi/blackberry/RSS.zip) of our RSS readers for Blackberry. There are still some limitations, e.g. we are supporting RSS feeds version 0.91 only at the moment, but we are working on more versions for the next beta. The Beta expires on Monday, 20th of September, but we will have another version then.

OTA Downloadlink is here (http://www.79bmedia.de/~knoppi/blackberry/bb.html)

Please send comments, ideas, bugs etc. to rssreader@<hidden>.

A first draft of a manual is available here (http://www.79bmedia.de/~knoppi/blackberry/rssman.pdf)

For those who are unfamiliar with RSS, it is a kind of a news distribution format. Which means, RSSreader, can be used as a news reader. RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication".

For articles and explanations of what RSS really is:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1267205,00.asp
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(protocol)
http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2002/12/18/dive-into-xml.html [Technical]

For some information about RSS feeds, many popular news websites provide RSS feeds that can be viewed in an RSS reader.

Mark,

thanks for the explanation :)

A good source to find 0.91 feeds is for example here:

http://www.syndic8.com/feedlist.php

They have a really nice search and filter system at the bottom of their page ...

Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/xs/syndicate.html/103-8337537-9993437) has a big list of 0.91 RSS feeds:

Another RSS option for Blackberry:

http://www.burningdoor.com/feedburn...ves/000697.html

Neither one is completely ready for PrimeTime yet. The BMedia has a nice interface, but only supports older RSS feed types.

The BurningDoor FeedBurner appears to work with all RSS types, but has a bad interface -- it's mostly a port and doesn't take advantage of any BB features yet. However, both companies promise to fix their shortfalls, and I expect we'll see some excelelnt product in the next few weeks.

You need a browser for OTA download, RSS reader itself is a standalone application which uses WAP to access the single feeds for updating.

after adding an own RSS feed? This message occurs at the moment you try to update an RSS 2.0 feed. We support RSS 2.0 in the next version, to be released Monday the 4th. Did the other feeds update successfully?

Before it blew up the program and now nothings comes back.

Thanks,

RSS v2 is supported in the latest release. I have just added your feed on my Blackberry and it updated without a problem. Is there a chance that you did not enter the URL on your Blackberry correctly? Does the update work for other feeds?

Hello ... I think the OTA version is back leveled. I think it put on v0.13 when I think download says v0.12.

But I download and installed it with the loader. I first removed the old version. Now when I launch it I put in my wap setting for T-Mobile. Then when I click on sample subscription, like PDA 24/7, it says it is getting feed and I see it communicating, but nothing comes back. I tried it for many of them with the same problem.

I verified my BB and it says I have v0.15 and kxml2 v0.1.

What do you think??

vinniet

Update ... I downloaded the newest version and deleted the old RSSReader and kxml2 file off the BB. I then rebooted and installed the new version

Same problem, it seems to download something but nothing shows up.

I finally got working - I think it had something to do with TMO fixing my TZone issues.
I recieve an error now - too many feeds (I'll write it down next time)
Is there a limitation to the mumber of feeds?

There is a new version of the FeedBurner MFR for OS 3.8+ available at:

http://www.feedburner.com/fb/products/rim/beta2-OS4/FeedBurnerMFR2.jad

this is still largely a J2ME MIDP2.0 port, but does include some BB specific features.

please try it out and post any feedback to our forums at
http://forums.feedburner.com/viewforum.php?f=11 and we will do our best to address any issues and/or enhancements for the product.

I prefer the Bloglines blackberry RSS reader myself.

vinniet

I use bloglines also but it has big limitations if you have many feeds.

RSSReader just does not work. I can get some init feeds to work but it will not update. Not sure since I went to OS4.

I would like to try FeedBurner but I get "907 Invalid JAR" when I try the link above and also the standard MIDP jad on the site.

I have BB 7230 on TMO using OS 4. I do not have MDS.

Thanks!

I wish I could try FeedBurner too. I can install it but I get a "could not open tunnel-failed" error when I try to connect.

Error Downloading

I tried downloading OTA versions of both NewsBerry and FeedBurner
I went to the following sites on my berry :
http://www.79bmedia.de/~knoppi/blackberry/NewsBerry_company.jad
http://www.feedburner.com/fb/products/rim/beta2-OS4/FeedBurnerMFR2.jad

On my berry to download and the following error came up:
“Download Failed” ->Click Details-> “901 Insufficient Memory”

I seem to have plenty of memory available… I checked the status on my berry and came up with the following:
File Free: 895724 Bytes
File Total: 12517376 Bytes

Is there a problem with the amount of memory I have, or a problem with the download from the sites?

1. Any tips on getting newsberry to work on T-mobile's 7100t? I have downloaded it successfully, but apparently do not have proper wap settings. What are settings? Where do I change them?

2. What is considered best news reader that allows for off-line reading of multiple subscriptions?

Thank you.

Nextel requires that you download the latest COMPANY software due to the way your internet settings are configured. Try that and let's see where you are... 8-)

I'm sure someone somewhere (over the rainbow) has said this before, but there is also a mobile version of bloglines. I have trialed a couple of the rss readers and havent been all that impressed. bloglines is the best solution i've found so far. the addy is www.bloglines.com/mobile. i know it's not the same as having an app that updates in the background or is "always on" but the interface is clean and if you keep your feeds on bloglines anyway, it's very convenient. that's my .001 (y)
