As far as I know, there is no Windows/Apple client for BlackBerry Messenger.

The only way to IM Blackberry users from a computer is if they are using an IM client on one of the standard IM networks (Yahoo, AOL, .NET(MSN)).

See BlackBerry Instant Messaging FAQ (http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=2973) for info on BlackBerry IM clients.

Doesn't BB Messenger use PIN messages and your desktop doesn't have a BB PIN and therefor can't work with BB Messenger.

BB does use PIN messages. It'll tell you when the message was delivered and when they received/read it :)

It's also the most reliable communication between BBs. Even if other things are down or don't work, the PIN likely will.

do pins count as sms messaging?

No, they are like Data. Think of them like e-mail but secure and just between BlackBerrys.
