call log and messages seem merged?

hello to all
My (8700g)
call log shows calls ( in, out, and missed ); but "messages", displays calls, sms messages AND voice mail messages!
It is a bit confusing. I am used to more conventional phone architecture.
I suppose there are options for what the "messages" part displays?

SMS, voice mails, missed calls are all important for us. Please help this noob sort this out!

Its an option!

Press your green talk key that will bring you to your list of recent calls. Then click the twheel go under general options. Then call logging. You can have it log all calls, missed calls, or no calls at all in your messages!

But I would prefer pop up and audio notifications for all three options

Missed, SMS,, and voicemail. Is this possible? Thank you
