I don't think you can tell which carrier by their phone number anymore because you can port your number to any company you want.

With the advent of being able to port your phone number, there's no way to know what the carrier is by phone number!

No need to know the carrier. Send the email to the cell phone's number @<hidden> like this:

555-555-1212@<hidden>

or this:

5555551212@<hidden>

I think this only works for US Providers, but check http://www.teleflip.com/ (http://www.teleflip.com/) for more info.

You can look up the area code/exchange combination for U.S. phone numbers at Telcodata.us. (http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/telco)
However, since number portability became available, that lookup will give you the carrier to whom that block of numbers was initially assigned. The actual phone number may have since been ported to another carrier.

As for SMS/Text messaging, why is there a need to even know who the carrier is or extention...or use teleflip. All you need is the 10 digit number to send SMS anyway. If you were sending messages by email instead of SMS, then yea, you would need to know the extention, I dont see the need otherwise.
