I was just looking at my 8700 earlier and noticed that the trackwheel is placed more towards the back of the device and the escape key is more towards the front of the device.

I know that it is useless information, but I wonder why that is? Why not have both centered between the front and back? Or do them visa versa? The left convenience key is centered, so why not these two?

Also, why was the mute button made about 2 times larger than the power button? I guess you have to work for RIM to know.

Just a guess, but it might be offset some to help avoid accidental button presses.

Who knows? I was just up late last night and was VERY bored. I forgot I even started a thread abouit it until I read it. LOL

It might be offset because the hardware inside the phone needs it to be that way.

the mute is larger because its easier to hit while you are talking

If you flex your thumb between the wheel and the button, you will find that your thumb naturally moves to that position and that having it in line with the wheel would feel akward.

Just a guess, but it'd be easy for us with big thumbs to scroll the wheel and press, and accidentally hit both the scroll wheel and the escape key at the same time.
