View Full Version : Password lock Blackberry only when *I* want to?

I have a Blackberry 8700f.

I want to be able to lock it with a password when I want to.

At the moment if I enable the password in Security Options I then have to set a Security Timeout which I don't want. I can't find out how to enable the password but disable the Security Timeout.

I can either set the timeout for an hour and I have unlock my Blackberry if I leave it lying down for an hour. Or I can turn off the password option and lock the keyboard which I've set to the convenience key. But to unlock the Blackberry in this case I just have to select Unlock.

I want to be able to use my Blackberry normally and then when *I* want to lock it I push the front convenience key and it is locked from other users and one has to enter the password to use it.

I'm basically looking for the equivalent of the [WINDOWS] + [L] combination we have on PCs.

It seems so simple: enable password but disable security timeout

Holding down Alt-Enter for a couple seconds should lock it.....

Also, if you disable the dial from home screen option, you can press K and the device should lock. As for setting the convenience key to lock the device, I can honestly not remember if that is a possibility. However, I believe it isn't. I am sure you can check and correct me.

The problem is not locking the device. I know how to do that.

BTW you can set the front convenience key to lock: Options - Screen/Keyboard - Front Convenience Key - Keyboard Lock

All that type of lock does is prevent me from inadvertantly pressing a key or something. That's similar to the hold switch on an iPod.

The simple lock you are referring to does not normally prevent access to the Blackberry. It does not ask for a password to unlock unless a password is set in the security options.

But if I enable a password in the security options then I have to enable a security timeout which I do not want. I want to be able to lock my Blackberry when I want to and NOT have it automatically lock, based on some timeout, when I don't want to.

If the password is enabled, you are required to have set a timeout. If you disable the password you can lock the device at your discretion. On the downside, no password is required to unlock it. Maybe in the next major release of the handheld software.

Thanks Doug.

Unfortunately that is the confirmation I was looking for.

It's not what I was hoping for. But it's the confirmation I expected. At least I will look no further.
