When you exceed the number of password attempts how long does it take for your blackberry to wipe itself out? Ours are currently taking nearly 2 hrs.

A wipe should only take a few minutes unless you have content protection enabled. If content protection is enabled it will take much longer (2 hours sounds about right).

How about if you have content protection enabled and you wipe from JavaLoader?
