To me it is an alert classification.

You can set filters for certain incoming messages to alert you differently than others.

For instance, I have my gmail sent to my handheld as level 1. In profiles, I set level 1 to vibrate. I have another account, which is mainly a copy of my desktop email; I have it forwarded to my handheld with no special treatment (no level 1 or header). Then in profiles, regular alerts are silent, so those messages just arrive quietly.

To add on - I use the Level 1 messages and filter to let me know when the boss emails me. All of the others can wait. I dislike the default setting of vibrate and red led for all emails. This setting is really helpful in keeping me out of trouble.
