View Full Version : Think I'll get an 8100 to supplement my 8700...

I'm a loooooooong time TMo user who totally loves my 8700 but wouldn't mind a camera and a slimmer profile for evenings out. I remember that thread in the 8700 forum about having multiple phones. For me, this is the perfect supplement. I HATE suretype (I suffered a 7100 for a few months) but for quick night time messages I could live with it in exchange for the tiny size and camera.

And if it's much quicker and more stable than the 7100, maybe I could learn to live with it full time...

Just a misc. rambling.

Hold off until you see the camera quality. Currenlty 1.3 mp. I have seen an image and I wasn't too impressed. Now I am a pretty decent photoshop user (my avatar is my passport photo) so I may demand more.

If i'm not mistaken that photo was from a pre-production device, many protos have camera quality issues and they many times better with the production

I concur. I really love my 'g' but if that phone is $200 bucks that makes a nice alternative device. And hey i think i read somewhere about an improved suretype. I like a qwerty but i didn't find suretype that bad. so we'll see.

It must be hell for you to go through the metal detectors with those studs coming out of your neck... :)

BG - I'd seen in another of your posts that you mentioned something similar about the camera. I hope they improve the quality prior to release, and perhaps the specs too - I saw a post where someone (you?) speculated that maybe 2MP was in the works. We'll see I guess.

To me, the biggest PITA about using two phones like this is swapping the SIM back and forth... but like I said - I'll do it when I go out at night.

And having different PIN #'s too.

Can someone comment on how bad is suretype compared to us who're used to the qwerty keyboard?

SureType is the death of me. But it just seems so much better on the 8100...RIM is playing Jedi Mind Tricks on me

i never thought about that, but its a nice idea...i use a razr for when i want/need something small and really hate missing the benefits of my 8700...i could use the 8100 instead of the razr and keep the 8700 for daily use (since i love qwerty also..)

CZBB,
Sorry for the dumb question, but what's the problem with having two pin numbers? I use BIS not BES - will it matter?

BG,
Someone else asked about whether the keys were actually cut in half, or rocked in some way such that you could more easily press E instead of R for instance. Have you found this to be the case?

MajSingh,
Yeah I came very close to buying a SLVR for this purpose - but the 8100 seems to be about the same size and obviously does so much more!

I've used both and I prefer the suretype. It's like built-in spell check for me. I have learned to live with the little quirks, which I believe are to be fixed on the 8100

Which Samsung digicam are you comparing it to? Thanks if you can give us any info on this.

I'm getting used to the idea of a second BB as a backup. My recently purchased 7105t will be doing backup duty when I get the Pearl. Then I can finally kick my Treo 650 to the curb!

I will probably use the 8100 as my main phone because of its size and use the 8700 and 7105t as backup phones

$200 with a 2 year commitment.

And after seeing BG's video review I'm more stoked than ever...

Prob to compete w/ the Q...

Guys, this is first and foremost meant to be a consumer product, not a business tool - regardless of its bulletproof made-for-enterprise underpinnings. Camera, media player, form factor, true type, etc. etc. etc.

You can't enter the consumer market without proper, competitive pricing. Full stop.

The camera on the 8100 is the best camera phone that T-Mobile offers. I've used it quite a few times.

And I have no idea why so many people complain about SureType unless you have huge hands. I have the 8700g and 7100t and although I am faster on the 8700g, typing on the 7100t I'm nearly just as fast...

Uh uh mobilecontrol - it's not an issue of speed, it's one of accuracy. There are TONS of pairs of 3 letter words which both use the same keystrokes. And voila - suretype guesses the wrong one about 99% of the time (e.g. get, and hey).

For me qwerty is the one and only.
