How to insert _underscore_ in Compose email address

I cannot figure out how to type in a new email address while using "Compose Email" that includes an _underscore_ in it. The Sym function does not pop up the list of symbols in that function. Can anyone advise?

This would be for a one time email to someone who I don't want/need in my address book.

When I select "Use Once" and then type in james(sym)(u)jones@<hidden>" I get james_jones@<hidden>

The sym key works fine for me in the use once field.

Have you tried resetting the BB?
Has the BB gotten wet or been dropped?
Does the sym key work in other places (notes, replying to email?)
What model BB?
What OS Version?

Try hitting SYM followed by U to get the underscore character; let me know if that works. If not, can you describe what happens;

Also, which model BlackBerry? RIM950's did underscores differently, for example.
