How much faster is EVDO than Edge? I am considering the 8703e from Verizon this weekend, but the fact that I can't get the phone free, and the plans are more expensive, makes me look more at T-Mobile. So, without any opinions about Customer service or Coverage, How much better is EVDO than Edge? Average KB/s would be great if anyone knows that.
Thanks in advance

EVDO in reality is about 600-900 kbps down and 122 up
EDGE in reality is like 100 kbps down
T-Mobile is a value oriented carrier and they do not look to upgrade their networks to 3G anytime soon. I don't believe you'll be able to buy any blackberry for free from any carrier. You might get it for free from some 3rd party store, but not directly from the carrier. If you live on the west coast you should pretty much stick with either Cingular or Verizon. My Cingular rep was telling me by about October they will be taking back bandwith from T-Mobile per their sharing agreement. T-Mobile is pushing for UMA in a big way because of this on the west coast

Both Cingular and TMobile give a free 8700 from Amazon.com. Actually, you get $ back, it's less than free.
I am East coast too.

How much faster is EVDO than Edge?
I am interested to know this as well, but I do not plan on tethering, so I want to know how much faster does the browser render web pages on an EVDO Blackberry as compared to an EDGE Blackberry.
Is there anyone out there who has both and can compare the time it takes to load a web page?

Hence you're buying it from a 3rd party not directly from Cingular or T-Mobile.
I've used both an EDGE and EVDO blackberry 7130e and an 8700c and they rendered about the same. You probably won't see much difference in web page load times. Where I see it is when I tether or if I'm downloading an attachment file.

One interesting thing to consider, and I don't know if it is a universal issue or just confined to Bell EVDO and Rogers EDGE in Canada but . . .
We have both Rogers and Bell BB's . . . .
EDGE is slower than EVDO but much more available: i.e. wherever we could get GPRS before on Rogers, we can get EDGE now;
On Bell EVDO we can only get it in metro areas such as Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. The rest of the time we are 1X only.
So here in Canada it seems that EVDO is much more limited in its range than is EDGE.
Speedwise, apparently EVDO is quicker but both are fast enough to suit our users but range is more important!

I tethered my 8700g (T-Mo) to my laptop and ran a few speed tests on some different sites and got around 155 kbps download speed according to the tests. It seemed pretty quick when I was browsing, not like cable, but noticibly faster than a dial-up for sure.

I use a blackberry 8700c on the edge network and when I tether it to my pc or my laptop it is almost dsl speed. Cingular's 8700c operates off of edge class 10 and is one of the highest download rates available.
