A while back people that entered the wap.cingular APN settings into their TCP profile and then used 3rd party applications, found insanely high bills at the end of the month, the charges were most often corrected by a 5 hour phone call to Cingular. I wanted to know if this issue still persists?

thanks..

Access Point Name
Think of them as destination "tunnels" which enable access to specific resources from a mobile device on a GPRS/EDGE or UMTS/HSDPA network.

I've used my Cingular BB several times as a modem and have not gotten any extra charges. I'm on the 29.99 plan

While there are probably not direct mass problems, i am sure a few people still suffer from it. no, no direct problems that i have heard of

so you did previously see the extra data usage and now it's not an issue?

it is one of those instances, someone says.."hey I was charged extra for using my APN. has this happened to you?" And everyone and their brother respond.

Since there has not been any posts recently, I would imagine that it is still a present problem, but just that no one has made a post about it.

Honestly, it is just like any other problem. Some people will say they suffer from it and others wont be affected at all.

Wirelessly posted (8700 C: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

What's the point of using an "APN"? I noticed I had to configure opera-mini with the proper cingular APN in order for that browser to work.

I'm new at this APN and BB stuff :/

APN is the tunnel in which your 3rd party apps access the internet. I configured mine from the first day and left it there.

Gecko, thanks for sharing your expertise!

I, too, want to try out some third-party apps (mainly minuet and opera mini). Get same message, telling me to enter voicestream into APN option.

Questions: By activating APN, do I screw up the built-in blackberry browser or built-in T-zones browswer (which I think are the same app here in T-mobile land). Or do those just bypass APN no matter what? Same with email and all other BIS / MDS / whatever connections?

any security issues to look for once activating APN?

I've had my APN setting on etc...in order to use BBWeather and have not had any extra charges. It's been 3 months now....keeping my fingers crossed. If you need the APN for cingular let me know.
