What does this mean? I can update my 8703e OS with this 7130e update?

jibi

This is the 8703e software. I simply said they also updated the 7130e software as well. And yes, you can update your Verizon 8703e with this software (although you may be the first in the world to do so).

Great work jibi...Nice find...

have you had the chance to examine the package? Any noticeable changes?

Where can we get the release notes?

jibi

Release notes are only released by T-Mobile Europe to my knowledge. No other carrier, unless you're a major account and request the information from your rep, makes this information publically available. The themes are the same from the previous release to this one. Aside from that, nothing else I can really look at.

I read that the newer version S/W is required to run TeleNav GPS services S/W on the Sprint BB's. Haven't heard anything else.

Will updating the Verizon 8703e with Sprint's firmware enable the GPS function? (It's to my understanding that the Verizon 8703e has GPS capabilities but that it's only enabled for emergency use only.)

OK, who will be first to test this out? :P

Next question, if we run the Sprint OS on the VZW 8703e, is there any GPS software that we can use to take advantage of the new OS?

Just curious......

Does anyone know if this version increases the speaker volume. I'd love to get the 8703 as load as the 8700c (telstra).

Just try it. Seems like no one is reporting anything back. Might as well give it a go - only takes about 40 mins total, and a rollback takes about 15-30 mins.

I put it on mine and there seem to be no major changes.

no to gps..speakerphone seems a touch louder, but I am not sure as I have only used it in my car before. I don't notice any earpiece difference.

To use this OS on a VZW 8703e, I use the BlackBerry.alx listed above? or do I need the alx file from the VZW os version? Thanks :-)

neither...You can simply install the new OS with no problems...The .ALX file is for those wishing to get all of the extra themes...

The Sprint 8703 GPS works !!!!!! I used the Spot software (the only package I could find) and tried it out in demo mode. It found where I was and displayed it on a map. A few items i noticed: 1. map downloads were really, really slow!! 2 i was never able to get it to display at the street level as the demo timed out. I think it stays in demo mode for 30 minutes or so and then you have to restart it. So, the bottom line is: GPS works for the Spring 8703, but we woefully need some software that will work. Spot doesn't seem to have either tech support or the ability to send data fast enough to make it usable. I hope this helps others. If I find any mapping software that works better, I will post. If anyone has found any mapping software that works well, please let me know.

I tried to update (*22899) & when the "update" was finished, I still had v4.10.344. What gives?

*22899 does not update your OS, only the PRL. You need to load the OS with your computer.

You got it...to update your OS, make sure after you install the update package, that you delete the "VENDOR.XML" file........ AFTER you install the package

Guys..

In reference to upgrading the OS to get GPS to work on the 8703e... I really don't think changing OS will work. I have a Bell Mobility 8703e and, like the Verizon devices, the GPS feature is disabled. I have also tried downloading the Sprint OS on my 8703e but it didn't change anything... So the OS is not the solution... What we really need is a "firmware" upgrade. I don't know if you noticed, but changing the OS does not change the splash screen that loads (first screen you see) when you reboot the device... Mine still has the Bell Mobility logo. So... I leads me to believe the there is still code in there specifically from Bell.. the firmware.

Just so you know.. On the Bell Mobility Network, 7250 users had to download the new 4.1 OS from the Bell site AND physically take their device to a store to get the firmware updated to benefit from EVDO... I have a suspicion the same will apply to GPS on the 8703e...

Now.. If only there was a way of telling what firmware version we were running on our devices.. maybe we could compare notes...

Or should we even bother since we seem to be at the mercy of our respective carriers???
