No Gprs

Hi, new user. I bought a 8700c unlocked from ebay to use in Dubai, UAE. I got the BB service from the local service provider Etisalat. I can make phone calls, SMS and send / receive e-mails. But cannot go on the web. The GPRS sign keeps going from CAP. (GPRS) to lower case (gprs) or cap (EDGE) to lower case (edge) The service provider here is saying cuase the unit is from the USA, need to update operating software. If I update software with cingular will that lock my phone again.

Also when I send e-mails it show on my blackberry e-mail not sent but the receiver has gotten it. Can someone please help.
