Last thing I heard was 2 months after the Cingular release. The specs of the T-Mobile 8800 have been bandied about but it looks like it will have WiFi but no camera.

Personally, I'm holding out for the updated version to hit the streets (6 months?) with both WiFi and a camera that takes movie clips as well as still photos.

The T-Mobile insiders over on HoFo say that RIM came the other day and laid out it's the standard 90-day exclusivity lockin for Cingular right now, so nothing for at least that long.

I confirmed with Blackberry yesterday. This is the standard rotating 90-day exclusivity that is common with Blackberry devices. T-Mobile had the 90-day exclusive on the Pearl, now Cingular will have the 90-Day exclusive on the 8800.

...and...

the RIM Rep came and spoke at our regional get together last night and when I asked her about the 8800, she said that RIM is ready, but T-Mobile is holding for the moment, trying to decide whether to pass on it entirely, and go for the upcoming 8900 series that will be out sometime this summer. . .

Obviously take everything with a grain of salt (or the whole shaker), but that's the rumor mill I'm hearing...

Okay, I just got off from work at 5:00pm and rushed to the T-Mobile store in the mall because I wanted to get the Nokia 5300 for my sister. Well, when I get there the rep tells me that they are all sold out of the black, but still had the lilac-colored one. I asked if she could show me what it looks like because they didn't have the lilac out on display. She went to the back room and came back with a dummy phone, but I really wasn't impressed especially since I already had my heart set on getting the black one for my sister. So, I thanked her for showing me, but the phone she had in her other hand caught my eye. I asked her what kind of phone it was and she said it's the Blackberry Pearl. I told her that I never knew it was so thin. (Believe it or not, this was the first time I've seen the Pearl in person) Okay, now here's what got me excited. I told her that I already have the 8700 and I was about to leave it at that, but then she went on to say, "Oh, yeah. We have a new version of that one coming out and it's thinner and has a camera." My reaction was, "Oh really? When's that coming out?" (acting like I didn't know about the 8800) and her reply was, "at the end of the month". After that, I just thanked her and left.

So, I didn't get the black Nokia 5300, but I also didn't leave too disappointed. I wasn't expecting to even get any info about the Blackberry or even had any intention of asking about it when I got to the store.

I know everyone's hearing different things and there is no definite date. But remember a couple weeks ago when the T-Mobile reps didn't know about the 8800 coming to T-Mobile? Well, I guess it just gets better with time.

So I had the 8700 for 11 months (the first day it came out in April 06 for Tmobile), then just bought the Pearl last week. Initially, I bought it thinking I'll return it before the 14 day refund/return policy. Well, I really like the Pearl so far. The camera (with a nice flash than others) is 1280x1024 resolution is a nice feature. The suretype keyboard isn't that bad. I guess I'll hold on to this until April (when I suspect 8800 will be released) and get the 8800 then.

How much is the 8700 going for? I want to sell it.

I don't think any verison of the 8800 will have WiFi. However the 8820 will have WiFi. All the 8820 will be is the 8800 + WiFi, nothing more. I have a feeling that TMO will hold out for the the 8820 because of their Hotspot @<hidden> sevice that is coming up (I believe the national roll out is this month). The 8300 will be the next cameraberry. The question is will Cingular get an exclusive on the 8820 and the 8300? If they do get an exclusive, I will be holding on to my 8700 a while longer

You're forgetting that they had the exclusive release deal on the Pearl and the 7100. They seem to tend to favor exclusives on the SureType models. They're definitely not unable to "offer any new models in a faster manner". They just chose to not jump for the exclusive on the 8800 for whatever reason.

..and what about Verizon, Sprint, Alltel and the other US carriers that aren't Cingular? You didn't mention how their good will among their customer base is affected.

This is true solely for the reason of carrier exclusivity. When phone specs warrant testing for network compatibility, naturally, additional time is required. If/When Verizon/Sprint get exclusivity, AT&T/TMobile can only choose to wait. Exclusivity happens and no one suffers in the process.

Vendor-specific OS is irrelevant on Blackberries. For one, the carrier-specific configurations are handled by the service books and not the OS load. You can also load any carrier's OS on any Blackberry as long as the model is the same.

The 8800 will never have WiFi. The 8820 will. All models will have the same features. If a model has an additional (or fewer) features it will have a different model number than the one you're comparing it to.

Are you serious?? With all the real suffering going on in the world can you honestly say you're suffering because you can't buy something that's not released yet?

I guess YMMV but if unlocking a device and bringing it over isn't good enough for you you'll just have to wait to get the same device with different logos.

I don't get what the big deal is-- I have TMo and have an unlocked 8800-- it's the same dang thing as the Cingular 8800. Works just the same, looks just the same, sounds just the same. What's the big deal? Unless you want to save money and get an upgrade, just get an 8800 and unlock it.

Personally, I think the 8800 only offered to B2B sounds pretty on point with TMo and their consumer base. TMo does not have nearly as many business users as the other carriers, and the 8800 is a business device. TMo has a more youthful, consumer-oriented, demographic that use their services (i.e the Sidekick crowd). So TMo will most likely wait and release the Papa Bear 8300 (GPS, wifi, camera, etc.) to compete with Cingular, when they are most likely only going to release the Mama Bear or Baby Bear 8300. Just my 2 pesos.

After reading some of these entries, I am getting the opinion that I may be with the wrong carrier. I never had a major problem with t-mobile but if their slowness to get the 8800 is due to their need to get with the consumer crowd and thus indicative of the future, I feel inclined to go with a carrier who feels the need to serve business needs.

ARHYTHMATIK

Yeah- the lateness in adding 3G is almost reason enough. Especially because there are no handsets on the horizon that will even be compatible with T-Mobile's upcoming 3G bands. But the price of plans and the quality of customer service (i.e. 24 hours) and excellent coverage (at least where I'm at) can't be beat.

takeshi
03-28-2007, 08:23 AM
TMO's user base does seem to be more consumer-oriented but they do have a pretty good number of business clients as well. They'll definitely offer the 8800 unless they want to lose their corporate client base which I can't imagine.

What good would unusable 3G on a BB be to businesses? Has anyone bothered to read about the bottleneck that even makes EVDO's speed advantage negligible over EDGE when browsing on a BB? The only real benefit is when tethering. None of our users tether. Really, none of them use anything but email and 3G's not going to help any with that.

Initially I had the impression that the Wifi would work like the Wifi on a laptop (free). I was told by a T-mobile rep that in order for the Wifi to work you would need the Tmobile blackberry internet plan for $20 dollars a month. She said no internet will work at all unless you have the internet plan even if the phone has Wifi. Can anyone confirm this?

Because ideally I would just want the voice plan with a Wifi enabled phone to browse the internet for free!

Yeah- 3G wouldn't help much at this point on Blackberries because of the bottlenecking. I was thinking for more media-centric devices like the Blackjack and other WM phones that do alot of streaming video and audio. I use a Blackjack along with my 8800 at this point.

for what its worth

Well, I just got off the phone with a Tmobile CS, now I know that you really can't rely anything on what they say but I asked about the 83xx that might come out in May and whether or not she has heard anything of that sort figuring that if its going to come out in May and we're already in April, they MIGHT know something. To my surprise, she said she knows for a fact that the 8800 will be out in May which makes sense since Cingular has the 90 day exclusive. But, if thats the case, I don't see Tmo releasing the 8800 and the 83xx in the same month. She said the 8800 is simliar to the current Pearl so I know she wasn't talking about anything else EXCEPT the 8800. I really hate to see cingular come out with the 8300 first and having ANOTHER 90 day exclusive because Tmo only charges $40 for BES and 300 free sms and cingular charges $50 with no sms. I'm just waiting to switch to Tmo. For what its worth, I thought I'd share this.

Long story, we wind up in her pad and lets just say she gave me a demonstration of her 8800. She also said that it will be available in "about 4 weeks". It defenitly sounds like the retail store guy didn't know what he was talking about. It has also been my experience that the retail channel will say what ever they want to get something sold. My RIM guy said that TMO Us will have the 8800 as a B2B only device, they are going for the 8300 in the main stream retail channel due to the Pearl's success. It was actually outselling the Sidekick, surprise surprise.

If you really want the 8800 bad, just go to Cingular, Unlock It, Remove the Logo and you're set. I did it and it works perfectly.

We met up on Sat night too. Had dinner, drinks then we went to play with our blackberrys. This is quite a chick. Shes like a regional manager. Knows everything about the upcoming product line. Showed me a bb product which is 13 months out. Unreal. Strictly a prototype but the clarity of the screen was something. The camera was something too. It had all the goodies you talk about in one machine.

About April 23, that seems to be the date for b@<hidden> people but I'm getting mine on Friday.

Sounds good. So this is the exact same as the Cingular one then? No WiFi or camera?

What really sucks at this point is that I want GPS, but I also want a camera and WiFi. Now it looks like I'll be forced to choose:

8800 with GPS, memory card, thin form factor
8320 with camera, wifi and memory card

I'm leaning towards the 8320 I think, despite the fact that like I said, I REALLY WANT GPS.

This is my first time posting here. Last weekend, I called TM to switch to Cingular with 8800. Was so disappointed by TM for quiet a while without a good handset. The supervisor told me TM 8800 version will be out in two weeks on Apr. 23. I told her that if I don't see it from TM on Apr 23, I will switch to Cingular immediately. She assured that I will not be disappointed. (BTW, I have a company phone from Cingular)

This seems to agree with what I was told by another TM call center supervisor. (I called two different times to make sure TM is not using any tactic to keep me from switching). My contact expired a long time ago.

So this is just what I was told. If it is not happening, just means being screwed by TM one more time, and the last time.

She gave me this as part of the companies program to test consumer attitudes or something. If ya'll ever saw the way this regional rep was built and her girlfriend too, OMG, ya'll would sign up with t-mobile for life. Hey, Hey I just got my T-Mobile 8800 today. Yippee!
OK, I am in Germany and this device is from T-Mobile Germany.
They have been late in delivery because the 8800 was sold out.
This thing is so cool. I had a 8700 before, before that an 7290, and before that an 7230, and before that - How did I live?
I just upgraded my 8700 to 4.2.1 yesterday but you cannot compare that to the 8800 running its version of 4.2.1 - much faster, more features and functions.
The 8800 keyboard is much better for me than the 8700 one.
The trackball is something you need to get comfortable with. But it's ok.
The german "Umlauts" (äöü and ß) are easier to type as well by typing the vocal and rolling up the trackball
And all BlueTooth services now work. (Dial up, file transfer)
Bought an 1 GB microSD card right away and am astonished by the sound of this little thing as an MP3 player. Using the BlackBarry as an mass storage device is fast as well.
I really miss my "front convenience key"
The GPS works on my device together with the BlackBerry Maps.
Unfortunately not with Google Maps which I find better. Google Talk works nice as well. But not my german Klicktel phone number search and inverse search.
To me this device is the perfect reborn BlackBerry.

Michael

P.S.:
Somebody below asked for a picture of the working GPS - here they are attached. Taken while walking in the garden...

To my tmobile friends that still dont have their 8800's, I have heard that most of the stores have them in stock now and that the staff will be trained on them this week. I guess you can probably buy them just about anywhere depending on the local manager. But I was also told that the stores arent supposed to release them until the 21st or 22d of April.

I couldnt wait so I went and bought the cingular 8800. I unlocked it and all works great. You can try what I did if you get the right customer service person at cingular (might have to go thru a few before you get to the nice one! LOL) I told them I was a verizon customer and they dont have International service. Told them I bought the 8800 to take internationally and was going to buy a sim card there to avoid the $1.35 a minute charges from domestic carriers. She just asked me to fax her the receipt then stayed on phone with me and got the unlock code and walked me thru it. She said you have to have a cingular sim card in it to unlock but that is actually NOT accurate. Anyway.. only issue of course with T-Mobile use is they dont support the phone and if you use MyFavs it wont work on the cingular version. If you dont get cinfular to unlock there are a few unlock companies online you buy from for $25 or so. FYI..also got Telenav for 9.99 a month...VERY good navigation software. Tmobile data plan supports it and they dont even know it! Good luck Tmo'ers!

A little known secret is that any phone is MyFaves capable. All you have to do is add your MyFaves selection via customer care or mytmobile.com, or you can put your sim card into a MyFaves phone and program them in that way.

Hey everyone im new here. Im a RSR (retail sales rep) for T-Mobile and Im an 8100 user and AVID fan of Blackberry.

Just thought Id chime in on a few things that Ive read in this topic.

From all the research that Ive done, the 8820 will add Wi-fi to the phone. Well, if T-Mobile releases this version, expect to pay 30 a month for that service not the standard 20 for blackberry. The main difference between the Blackberry Sidekick and Hotspot internet plans is that the sidekick and blackberry dont offer wifi so theyre only 20. Phones like the Dash and the MDA which do have wifi require the 30 a month hot spot plan to take full effect of the internet. With that said, if the 8820 is released for t-mobile, I cant imagine us having full wifi available for only 20 a month. Why would you buy a dash and pay 30 then? It doesnt make sense.

Also about all this release date stuff. Like I said, Im an AVID fan and as such NEED to have every new BB that comes out. Ive been following the 8800 since its February 15th release date at Cingular. Now if the 90 day exclusivity is true then April 15th would have been fair game for bids on the phone on T's part. But Ive heard NOTHING about this. I plan on calling customer care tomorrow to see if they give me this same April 23rd date that you all are apparently getting. But like I said Ive heard NONE of this and I follow it every day at work.

At work we have this thing called T-Mobile News.com. Its an intranet site to let us know about price changes, new plans, and new phones. Now, this is where I think the April 23rd date is nonsense. Before the 8100 came out we had emails in our inboxes, and articles all over t-mobilenews WEEKS before it released. This new Sidekick ID the trimmed down version. I had to take an online training for that LAST WEEK and the phone doesnt come out til the end of the month. Now why is it do you think that not on T-mobilenews, not in my email, not even in conversations with my coworkers have I heard or seen ANYTHING about an 8800? Seems a little weird to me too. Kinda makes me think that maybe we're not getting it after all.

Dont get me wrong, Im pissed off that I think this, and I hope im wrong. But i have heard NOTHING about this phone from ANY channel at work. And if it was truly coming out in less than two weeks, i wouldve seen emails, seen stuff on our intranet, wouldve taken training already and we'd probably have them in the back room by now.

Oh and these stores that say they have 30 in the back. Take a picture cuz i dont believe you. And if you do, its probably just because youre a test market. Ask your RSM, then youll know if you are or not. My store was the only store in our region to carry the new D-Wade Sidekick and we had it a month and a half before its release. If there are stores that have the 8800 then it actually makes more sense to my argument that we're not going to see it on the 23rd. These stores have it because its a test market and it wont be out til summer.

Like I said I hope im wrong. But as someone who has "inside info" and someone who wants this phone as much if not moreso than the next guy, Ive done my research and ive seen no evidence to point out that april 23rd is anything more than an internet rumor.

IanHummel
04-17-2007, 07:25 AM
No offense man, but if CSR's are telling customers over the phone a solid release date, I'm pretty confident it's coming out. The reason being is that the CSR's at the 800 number are usually for the most part completely clueless. So for all of them to just all the sudden rattle off the same release date, and with so many people going into stores and seeing the deivces, etc, I think your wrong bud.

People like you really irritate me. Take a picture? Sure man, I'll get right on that. I'll walk into my local T-Mobile store, ask to see their stock of 8800's and then start taking pictures right there. I'm sure that'll go over well. Internet rumors can usually be figured as just that, but with this much confirmation from various different people (CSR's on the 800 #, store reps, mgr's (all people that usually don't have a clue about new stuff until they see it in person and have a formal training) people seeing them, etc) I really don't picture you being correct.

I was able cross reference known T-Mobile store locations with the radiation signature of the 8800 (that signature was available in the DoD database). After identifying the one location in Dallas meeting the search criteria, I then dispatched a tactical team to the target area to establish a perimeter.

Using a BB Maps tactical sat uplink to guide me, I was able to defeat the T-Mobile store security. I found the vault holding the 8800s and interfaced my BB to the electronic lock. Just as Cloey was about to decode the combination, I was hit over the head with a chair by the store manager (who had stopped by unexpectedly as part of an evil side plot to usurp the T-Mobile network and use it as a force for evil).

Meanwhile, after an epic struggle, I was able to defeat the store manager. After securing him to a chair with duct tape, I began to torture him by ramming MicroSD cards under his thumbnails. It was not long before he revealed the combination to the safe, and admitted to the April 23 "release plot".

After returning from commercial break, I opened the safe. Alas, the BB 8800s were gone. At that moment, I heard screaching tires and gunfire. I can only assume that I just missed radical forces who, only moments before, secured the Dallas stash of 8800s for use in their plot to take over the SETI-at-home compute network. Apparently, they plan to use the massive compute power to destroy RIM (next season)....

Okay well Im glad Im wrong lol.

I just called Customer Care and they confirmed the April 23rd release date. And I went to T-Mobilenews.com and they have a post about the 8800 that went up either today or yesterday. So yeah its official.

The rumors are half true about in store sales though. Its not just for corporate sales and upgrades. They wont be available in stores but you can order yours on T-Mobile.com first thing April 23rd in the morning if you want. They even confirmed that employees can order theirs through the special account care website as well so Im ordering mine first thing in the morning too. Hope this helps.

Wow, that's pretty steep. You can pick up Cingular models on eBay for $450. MAYBE $500 if you don't wait for a good deal. Sometimes unlocked, but if not, that only costs $20. That amounts to maybe a $75 discount for a 2-year commitment? Not cool. My contract expires this month, I need a new BB, and this is pretty much going to dictate whether I stay with T-Mobile or not.

Looks like I'll either fork up the dough and get it on eBay and stick with T-Mo, or jump to Cingular and nab it on Amazon for $149 in exchange for a slightly higher monthly bill (and, admittedly, better coverage).

That's ridiculous. I agree with the other guy. I'm on month to month right now and I was going to re-up for two years if the price was right, hell, even somewhat reasonable, but T-Mobile can kiss my ass for $425 on a two year for something that's been out for over two months on Cingular. Hell, for $25 more I'll buy one on EBay. What a joke. I could maybe see the Papa Bear being released as a T-Mobile exclusive being that price fully loaded, but forget this.

The price point is so high because TMO really does not want anyone to buy it.
It's release is just to "keep up" with Cingular.
They really want you to wait for the Crimson, due to be released at the end of 2007.

This post doesn't make sense. Why would any company NOT want customers to buy anything they have decided to stock? T-Mo simply could have not sold the 8800(or 8820 or whatever the heck it's gonna be called), and moved on to the next toy in line (83xx).

Furthermore, T-Mo makes the bulk of there $$$$ off contracts, not phones.

Operating on T-Mobile's EDGE network, the quad-band BlackBerry 8800 offers T-Mobile's myFaves(i) experience to easily stay in touch with those who matter most, and incorporates built-in GPS (Global Positioning System) to support location-based applications.

Hi everybody,
I need some help with my blackberry 8800.

1) I have several opportunities where when I was pressing a key number, the sound of the key stayed on and the only way to stop was removing the battery. While I was hearing that sound I got a message saying:
"Uncaught exception:Java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException".
The sound was like a constant beep. It seems that the phones freezes, and the sound didn't stop even turning the phone off.
Any clue?

2) Sometimes where it shows the carriers name I get a line saying "data connection can not be established"
Any Clue?

3) I'm using a Mac computer and also PocketMac for Blackberry. The problem is that for example I change a phone number from one of my contacts in the computer or the device and after I sync them it doesn't make the change on the other device/computer. If I delete the contact it sync it ok, but not if I update the contact.
Is there any other soft to sync my 8800 with Entourage better that PocketMac?
Any clue?
I will appreciate your help.
Cheers!

I was going to say no.. but thinking about I am on my companies discount plan. So that may be it. It could also be that I have be a TMO customer for 5 years and have never upgraded my phone (through them) and I have not been under contract for about 3 years.

Ordered mine this morning through customer service. $349 with a two year extension to my contract. My sad little 7230 looks like it is about ready to cry on my desk knowing that the time of its demise is near.

I just called TMO and they quoted me $460+ a 2 year contract if I wanted the 8800 because I upgraded to the 8700 a year ago. Its a shame to be told that since I've been a customer of theirs since 2003. It would actually be cheaper for me to break contract and sign up with Cingular than to pay the quoted cost for an 8800 w/ TMO.

how is it cheaper? ETF with Tmo is what, $175 - $200. add that to the $300 for cingular's 8800 and you're talking right under $500. plus activation fee and cingular has more expensive BES/BIS data plans.

I called 3 stores, nobody had it. I then went to the T-Mobile site and ordered it over the phone. Will have it by Friday. $399 with a 1 year contract. Good enough.

I am surprised they didn't tell you it was only available online.

ok so UPS just dropped off my new 8800, man does it look good! Ive tried to get a new theme from the options menu and it says " sorry, themees are currently not supported for your software version". Anybody else get this? Know a fix? I read it doesnt need plazmic theme loader because it already has a loader, so i dont know what the problem is.

There are no downloadable themes yet for the 8800. Only the vendor supplied themes.

yes i tried it both inside and outside, both "searching for satellites". No the sides on mine do not squeak at all.

Are you in downtown Chicago around a lot of tall buildings? That tends to kill GPS signals. Hopefully that's the case, because if T-Mobile disabled GPS I would be really upset. But I doubt that's it, you just may not have a clear enough view of the sky. Alternatively, have you checked out the options/advanced options menu to make sure that GPS isn't somehow disabled?

I'm pretty curious about the GPS issue as well given that there is no formal mention of it on th Tmo site.

My 2-year Verizon contract on my 7250 is coming due -- can't wait to finally step up!

chi - are you inside or outdoors? The 8800 must be outside (or by a window) to acquire the satellites. I have GPS working on an 8800 on T-Mobile.

After reading this thread today I signed into my t-mobile account (at www.t-mobile.com). Chosed the upgrade path, and yup, the 8800 is there, all the way at bottom under "handheld" below the dwayne wade sidekick.

After about 15 minutes, we got it to work. He had me do about 6 things, resent service book, took sim out etc. then after about 2 minutes, it just started working. It works great, shows your movement on the screen with street names when you turn onto different streets, has nice zoom capabilities, allows you to send your location to another, very cool stuff. Works better than i had imagined

YES...they do. I am on the line now with customer service to get it replaced. I thought about trying to fix it but a buddy of mine got one from Cingular a few day ago. He mentioned to the person there that the creaking was a problem and the rep stated that they were aware of the issue and had a new batch of them from RIM that is was resolved. I felt his and it was as solid as my 8100. I will update you guys with my findings from this call:-(

UPS just dropped my 8800 off about 20 minutes ago and I've been playing with it ever since.

Something weird though, I hope it's a software issue with my BB and it's easily fixable because I don't want to be sending it back and waiting.

There's a LINE that goes vertically right through my screen. It seems to be a variation of other objects already on the screen as it's not completely dead pixels or anything like that.

I already tried yanking the battery out for a hard reset and still nothing.

It doesn't seem like a hardware issue to me. Let me cross my fingers.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

I have long had TMobile coverage and one of my biggest gripes is that the microphone particularly on my old BB 7300 series and my current 8700 seems to be just too sensitve. If I call anyone from outside they hear SO much background noise that it is unbearable for them. Is this a TMobile issue, a GSM issue or a Blackberry issue? I do recall having the same problem wiht my old Motorola StarTac and TMobile in 1998/1999 and onwards so I suspect it may be either a TMO or a GSM problem.

Does anyone know if the microphone has better condensers or whatever is necessary to make it possible to use the telephone on a BB 8800 from the street without the person at the other end thinking you're at a cattle auction?

caggarcia I've had the same issue with my BB 8700. I believe it is scratches on the screen that cause those watery looking lines under certain lighting. I have also noticed an increasing amount of dust under my screen on the old 8700 in bright light. I'm concerned that this has not been addressed in the 8800 and from what you show it seems as if the screen has the same tendency to scratch.

I don't think so. I just got my 8800 and I have been handling it quite carefully. It's not a scratch it's literally a 2 pixel wide line running down the screen in which looks like other objects are embedded into it.
