Uninstall all BlackBerry software - Desktop Manager, Device Firmware, etc.
Delete the following directories:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion
C:\Program Files\Research In Motion
C:\Documents and Settings\*\Application Data\Research In Motion
Download and install the latest version of Desktop Manager - 4.2 SP1. Get it from:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22
Make sure you leave the installation files in a permanent place - they may be needed for a repair.

Download and install the latest firmware from your provider. Here's the major players:
Cingular (https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=577BCC914F9E55D5E4E4F82F9F00E7D4)
Nextel (https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=C8ED21DB4F678F3B13B9D5EE16489088)
Sprint (https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=FC3CF452D3DA8402BEBB765225CE8C0E)
t-Mobile (http://www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade/) (t-Mobile phone number required)
Verizon (http://vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry/) (Verizon phone number required)
With Desktop Manager running, connect your device. Try to establish the connection with your device by using Options --> Connection Settings from the DM menu, and hit the [Detect] button. Don't worry if it doesn't detect.

Run the Application Manager. It should detect the device. Just keep hitting [Next]. In the screen with the [Advanced] button, click it and select to NOT back up the device and proceed. If this doesn't work, try deleting all USB and fake USB devices like pseudo serial ports connected to USB ports and modems that don't exist (DM sets up a Standard Modem) and reboot your computer. Real USB ports will be re-detected and set up. Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, and click the [Change/Remove] button for BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.2.1 and select Repair. Once that's done, try steps 5 and 6 again. If it still doesn't work, it's probably a USB problem - try to find another computer to set up on.

thanks for the advice, however i still have had no luck, tried it on 3 other computers with no success, when you said application manager, is that the same thing as the application loader in device manager? when i try and use the devicemanager it shows "disconnected" in the toolbar. also i'm in australia using the optus service software, i haven't used the phone here before the whole problem arose when i took my new zealand vodafone simcard out and put my new optus one in. any other thoughts on other ways i could fix this? or will i need to take it to a service centre?

hey, just an update, used the cingular software and everything came right, thanks alot for all your help
