It's not currently do-able with the native BB software.

Check this thread for possible solutions:

You can download and play MP3's from the web but not via email.

There is a program called AudioPOP that will play MP3 attachements.

I think the max size is 1MB so it's not really good for playing songs.

AudioPop does, indeed, have a 1 MB file size limit, but the process that takeshi referenced does not require any add-on tool or process. With 'songs', the 8800 will download and play MP3s and WAVs from another location - the web, the storage card, etc. The 8800 (and other BBs in general) do not allow one to download and play audio those formats via email with the native OS.

We're comparing apples and oranges.

'Fraid you're all WRONG

I have emailed MP3's to an 8800 and then successfully played those back from the email rather than from a website, storage card or similar. These are full 4 minute mp3 tracks encoded at 160kbs and around 5-6mb in filesize.

However this is using a BES server not using a BIS service - so it may just be the BIS service that is restricting the playback of attachments...there are plans by RIM to upgrade carriers BIS service from BIS 2.0 to 2.x, but who/when/ its a question of wait and see..

Sorry, yes... that is allowed for BES, but not for BIS 2.0.

Just curious, what makes you think that BIS 2.x will allow it when BIS 2.0 will not?

Because with all the BB current models (81 & 88 series) supporting media, and the functionality in BES it's just a question of time before it's introduced into BIS.
