View Full Version : 8800 in Hong Kong-- Unlock??

I am an American living in Hong Kong. I have never used a Blackberry before, but would really like to get the 8800. So I looked into getting a Blackberry 8800 from Smartone/Vodafone. But they say it is locked to their system and can never be unlocked (not even when contract is finished). Because I may be moving back to America in about 6 months, it seems stupid to buy a phone I have to give up so soon. Does anybody know if there is ANY way (even if I have to pay a bit) to unlock a Hong Kong Smartone/Vodafone Blackberry for future use with an American service provider? Or would it be possible to buy an unlocked phone FROM America and use that in HK? Any tips (especially from HK-based Blackberry users) would be MUCH appreciated...
(As a sidenote, they offer a Blackberry Pearl that is unlocked, and can be used on other networks, which is tempting... But as the whole point is for me to quickly and easily write emails, I find it annoying to type on those two-letter keys...)

Kindly use the search feature for "unlock" or "unlocking" for that matter. Also see the sponsors forum.
