no.. you cant just IM people. Everyone must have a blackberry and everyone must have been sent an invite by you to be listed as a usable contact in messenger. You can send them an invite in the messenger menu using email or their PIN numbers. They have to accept and then you can begin messenging each other.

Options than Status from the homescreen or type "mypin" followed by a space when composing a message or note or just about anywhere autotext works.
