I know nobody has it yet, but people have been ordering. These are a few questions I hope someone can answer once they receive the device.

1) Is the GPS functionality crippled?

2) I understand that the bluetooth in the 8703e will not auto-discover and enable with devices (that you have to turn bluetooth on and actively set up the connection). Does bluetooth in the 8830 work in the more conventional way (establish pairing once, then it will automatically pick up whenever an established device is on and within range)?

1 - VZ will have a GPS function that you can pay for monthly. It will be out for the 8800 in a month or two and cost approx. $9.99 per month according to company rep.

2 - Not sure. I did not try bluetooth when I used the device last week. I am supposed to get mine on Wed, so I will let you know once I get it.

Thanks.

With regard to #1, I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with Verizon's crippling of built-in features in favor of their own pay-per-use offerings. Maybe I should give Cingular a try.

But then again, if Verizon is going to offer it, maybe one of the free options will work on the hardware, perhaps with some modification.

I'd appreciate any feedback you may have.

Also, the lack of a camera on this thing is somewhat of a disappointment.

Ya thats also a question that I had, can you unlock/fix the features so that you can get the "full" phone and still use it on the network or are you SOL at that point?

And anyone else heard of other features being crippled?

Does the VZW 8830 support Bluetooth DUN (like the GSM 8800)?

Is there a way to unlock the GSM portion of the 8830 to be able to use any GSM carrier while visiting in the UK? VZW gsm charges are ridiculously high, I believe at $2.29 per min.

I can unlock the verizon 8830 for you
this way you will be able to use any sim card and not pay $2.29 per minute plus the monthly fee to verizon
i will be adding the product on my site later today.

email me if you have any other questions about unlocking the 8830

Do you think that VZW will be giving out the unlock codes? Or is that a long shot?

And is that all it is... just entering a code. I have had unlocked phones in the past, but I never had to do it myself.

Will you be able to unlock the Sprint 8830 when it becomes available?

Quick question... if you unlock the VZW, can you by a prepaid sim through another carrier for international use?

The Sprint version apparently ships unlocked. This suggests that the VZW version will be unlockable. Keep in mind, though, that this won't allow you to use domestic GSM carriers, since the radio doesn't support the North American GSM frequencies.

Only for voice, not for data.

So does the VZW international plan cover unlimited Data just like domestic?

That is my understanding. You'll pay roaming rates on voice, but not on data.

So I guess, while roaming in a GSM area, if one were to use a local SIM card, then one would lose the unlimited data available through Verizon's SIM card...
Wonder if one can use a local SIM for voice, then switch to the Verizon SIM for data...and switch back several times a day as needed...

My rep told me the data is unlimited with the Verizon SIM Card but you have to be on the international plan (20-30$ more a month).

Also are we sure we can not buy a 3rd party SIM card for voice AND data???

Even if its pay per min for data.

I am still unsure what way I want to go (Verizon's SIM vs. Prepaid / Local SIM)

Well...$64.99 for unlimited International data is pretty darn good...and right at the same price as Cingular....
