I want to try and encode some videos for my 8830......I'm on a mac, but I don't think that makes a difference.....

What codecs are supported? iPod format .mp4/.mpg/.mov? Or windows codecs .avi/.wmv/etc.?

Anyone who knows I thank you in advance

Take a look at the sticky thread at the very top of this forum titled 8800 videos.

I'm an 8800 user on the Mac....the 8830 SHOULD support the same codecs as the 8800, although I've read some mixed reports that indicate that VZW MAY (stress MAY) have futzed around with the codecs to get the 8830 to support VCast videos, and in the process messed up some of the native codecs.

Regardless, here's the list from RIM's website:

Video

The following video formats are supported:

* MPEG-4 Part 2 - Simple Profile + bvops (including DivX files in this format)
* H.263 Profile 0 and Profile 3
* WMV 9 Simple Profile Video Decoder

The following video file extensions are also supported:

* .avi containing MPEG4 Part 2 and H.263
* .mov containing MPEG4 Part 2 and H.263
* .3gp containing MPEG4 Part 2 and H.263
* .mp4 containing MPEG4 Part 2 and H.263
* .m4v containing MPEG4 Part 2 and H.263
* .mpg containing MPEG4 Part 2 and H.263

Formats and codecs are two different things. All the extensions you listed above are formats, not codecs. You need to make sure that your videos are in compatible formats and codecs. Check the knowledgebase at Blackberry.com.

There is resource Blackberry Movies (http://blackberrymovies.com/) with few free movies for BB in .3gp format but they don't work on 8800 or 8100.. Does anybody know where can be a problem?
