View Full Version : Gmail BIS vs Fowarding
I use Gmail and I've noticed that just about everyone has set up Gmail in BIS. I didn't do it that way. I went into the Gmail settings and set it up to forward to my BB address. It's been working great this way and I don't seem to have some of the problems that I see posted here in regards to Gmail.
Am I missing something? What is the advantages or disadvantages to the way I do it vs setting up a BIS Gmail account?
Thanks

You get two-way message reconciliation if you set up your GMail account through BIS. This is a HUGE advantage over a simple forwarding setup.
In your setup when you reply to email the From address will be your BIS email address and the sent message is not save to Gmail.
If you setup Gmail in BIS you will be replying with your Gmail account and Sent messages will be saved in Gmail.

if i were you, i would not forward your Gmail to your Blackberry email address. your sent messages are not saved to your Gmail, so if you ever hop onto your computer, you have no record of anything you have ever sent.
Just add Gmail as an email account on blackberry. there is no delay with Gmail...email arrives instantly just like with a blackberry email account.
Give it a try.

I also forward directly from Gmail, and until I read this post I never understood the advantage of BIS.
However, I have a filter list in gmail that basically doesn't forward unimportant mail to the BB. Is there a way to set up filters in BIS based on domain name that will keep the email in GMAIL, but not forward to the BB if the domain name is listed in the filter list?

Absolutely.
You can set up filters in BIS to control the emails that get delivered to your device.

I used to filter directly in gmail, and not forward any emails from domains that weren't important enough to read on the bb.
Based on the input here, I removed those filters from gmail and put them into BIS. I have about 2 dozen filters that say if FROM xxx DON'T FORWARD, and the default, when no filter applies, is to FORWARD TO BB
But I'm not getting emails on the BB
However, if I send emails to my gmail acct from another gmail acct, they show up on the bb. If I sent the emails from my corporate acct, they don't show up. From yahoo, they don't show up
The emails are showing up in gmail, but they're not making it to BB. I pulled battery just in case, but no difference
help please

ok, seems like i never set up the gmail BIS account properly. It looked like it was right, but I noticed it was different than the other account i set up.
So, i deleted the bis gmail account and recreated it, and it looks likes its working
go figure
Thanks for all the great replies. I'm going to set up Gmail in my BIS. Sounds like this is the way to go.

i recommend just using the Gmail account and adding it as an account, rather than forwarding to the BIS email address. you have better 2-way sync that way and all of your sent messages are on the Gmail server

If you setup Gmail in BIS you will be replying with your Gmail account
This should be apparent but just to clairfy, the same is true of email that you compose on your BB -- assuming you choose to compose via gmail. You can't compose or reply with your gmail account if you're forwarding to your BIS address.
