Unlocking a 8700C for use on Rogers in Toronto

I am looking at buying an 8700C from the states, which is locked to work on the Cingular network. I prefer the look of this model over my current 8700r with Rogers. Where is a good place to purchase one and once purchased, is it true that if I get it unlocked that it willonly function as a phone and not work for data services? I was told that further configuration would be required to be able to use data services and that it is a complex operation and you need software to do it.

It'd probably be cheaper to get an 8700c housing from a site like Cellular Accessories - SonyEricsson, NEC, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Sanyo and Samsung. Quality housing, keypads, LCD screens, chargers, batteries, data cables, parts (http://www.cnn.cn).

That housing is a good idea. Assuming I buy the actual new phone from Cingular, however, for $340.99 U.S.D., they will provide me with the unlock code. They advise though, as do Rogers, that an unlocked phone RARELY works with data services on another network. Is this true?
