View Full Version : 8830 Data Rate?

I've had my 8830 for about a week. The download time for webpages seems much slower than I expected. I thought that 1x EV-DO ran at 600mb/s, but my 8830 seems like it's closer to 56kb/s. My questions are:

Is it my imagination?
Is there a setting that I'm not aware of that would cause it to run slow?.
Is there a way to measure the actual data rate that the phone is downloading at?

If anyone here can shed some light on this I'd be grateful.

The data speed has several variables: the connection, the processor, memory, distance to the tower, tower congestion, etc. Also, voice has priority over data. That being said, the normal EV-DO data rates are typically 400-800 kbps for REV 0 with a max of 1.2 mbps.

What page are you trying to view? Is it optimized for mobile devices? Also keep in mind that a handheld (a BB) will get nothing near the speed for a PC or MAC.

Man you guys are fast! Thanks for the prompt reply. 400-800kb/s, that makes more sense.

I'm using Yahoo Finance as my reference here. As far as I know it's not optimized for mobiles. I'm in the Indianapolis metro-area and I have a full strength signal indicated, so I don't think the phone is "downshifting" to lower data rates because of a weaker signal. I think my mistake was thinking 1x EV-DO was mb/s instead of kb/s. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Holy crap! 600 mbps would be insane. I have 30mbps at home and that's insanely fast....4-600kbps is perfectly fine for a mobile phone... What's rev a's specs?

Gibber, what was I thinking, 600 mb/s!? T1 is 1.5 mb/s. What's a cable modem speed, 600 kb/s give or take? My 8830 is no where near as fast as my cable modem. I need to try the 8830 modem out with a laptop and see how that compares. Maybe the bottleneck is the 8830 processor and OS.

REV A is in the same ball park as far as average speeds - 400-800 kbps up to about 1.2 mbps with the max at something like 3.1 mbps.

I get about 2.5 mbps to 4.5 mbps with my cable modem (downlink) and about 3 mbps with DSL in my office (I am really close to the switch however). I think 2.5-4.5 is pretty common for fiber optic cable systems. DSL varies with the package you get and the distance to the switch.
