Vodafone just released 4.2.1.101 for the 8800. This is for GSM devices only (not 8830).

8800M_PBr4[1].2.1_rel161_2.3.0.80_A4.2.1.101.exe

Download Here (http://members.a1.net/updateservice/bb/)

Instructions for installing:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. It's 4.2 SP2.
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507/543, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

I see that there is a new version of BBMaps (1.135) in the new OS. I'm having trouble getting the icon to show up though.

Did you read the entire first post? BBMaps is hidden on Cingular/AT&T devices. There is a link in the first post for replacing the LBS.alx file for adding BBMaps to the Cingular/AT&T devices (along with the Blackberry.alx for adding themes.)

Of course. This isn't my first rodeo you know. ;)

I figured it out. The problem is the updated LBS.alx file in the jibi thread. It still has

_vendorID="~102|124|137|119|162|142|183|147|217|175"

in the entry for "net_rim_bb_lbs_ribbon.cod".

I removed it, resynched and now I'm good to go.

Yes. Worked just fine. Just make sure you delete the vendor file and use the updated .alx files from jibi's thread to enable BBMaps and unlock vendor themes.

Also, if you don't want PTT installed, make sure you make the following change in the platform.alx file before you upgrade:

Change the _vendorID from 102 to 220 in the following line:

<fileset pttApp="True" Java="1.0" _vendorID="102">

It's about 1/3 of the way down in the file.

I don't know. The method I used came from a PTT thread here on BBF.

Does your change remove the app from the BB entirely? or just stops it from working?

The method I listed will uninstall PTT from a BB that has it installed or not install it at all if you are doing a fresh OS install.

Both methods do the same thing.

I haven't posted edited platform .alx's in jibi's thread because he had originally added platform.alx's to "add" PTT to OS's that left it off. Now everyone wants to remove it. What would be nice is a checkbox in the apploader during original install for it, not just add it by default if it's an AT&T device.

I noticed that on the UK Vodafone site there's a 4.2.1.168, 4.2.1.103 with an application package of 2.3.0.54. Does that make it more current or an older one because of the older app package?

I couldn't agree more - that is why there are only two main differences in BB's. Model numbers are a means of indicating which features they have - keyboard type, and hardware (camera vs gps, etc). The rest is OS driven and I want 4.2.2 also.

I'm not sure I understand why you think an OS release would suddenly be available for all models once it has been released for a single model... In any case, the carriers always have to test, approve and release the OS updates once they get them from RIM so there's no telling where the delay may be with any given update.

The reason I was not getting the lightning Bolt when charging was that the 8800 was fully charged! I ran it down today and when I plugged it in the Charge indicator appeared. I thought it was always present no matter what the state of the battery. I guess I was wrong.

The vendor.xml file simply tells Desktop Manager to only load that carrier's OS to that carrier's model BB. Nothing is lost by removing it.

So far the at&t version has been holding good. But telenav stoped working and I had to download the newer version. Still having a bit of an issue when it comes to media net and browser connection as it is taking a long time (side by side on another BB, theother wored and mine came back no connection).

I am experiencing this exact problem. It's super obnoxious. A google search (that took me to pinstack) leads me to believe that it is a software issue with some of these versions, but depending on what region you're in (I'm in Denver), you might not run into it. I'm going to load the old T-mobile OS back on when I get home from work, hopefully it will go away.

Color me skeptical on that. Is that just a rumor you heard, or can you point to some solid evidence and statements to that effect somewhere? I'm generally doubting that's true, but **if** it is, and the Apple fanboys with iPhones are really being given preference over long-term AT&T-->Cingular-->AT&T customers, then I'd sure like to know it to raise holy hell with them. FWIW, I haven't seen any noticable differences in speed before/after the iPhone release date.

Will the modified alx file for Vodaphone's version work for this as well?

go to this link:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/ringtones-themes-wallpaper-discussion/28821-blackberry-alx-edited-files-packaged-theme-installation-4-1-4-2-only.html

and use the modified .alx's that match the version numbers. Don't worry about the carrier name associated. As long as the numbers match you're ok.

Where did you find this new release? I just scoured both blackberry.com and logged in to T-Mobile and see nothing.

Link, please?

There is also a sticky in the 8800 forum for Vodafone's .101 version. They are the same OS. You can follow the instructions there for the update.

This 101 had my 8800 doing all sorts of funky things with call dropouts and tethering was unreliable.

I'd still like to know if there's a direct link to the T-Mobile 101 release.

Good luck.

I'm really confused...
TMO says the latest for the 8800 is 4.2.1.74.
The links provided are for a 4.2.1.101 version...
What's what?

Carriers release different versions as they see fit. All software is written by RIM and tested and released by the carriers.

T-Mobile is listing 4.2.1.74; there are newer versions available from other carriers.

T-Mobile worldwide has currently two different versions:

TMO US: 4.2.1.74
TMO-US-Upgrade Service: BB Upgrade US TMO (http://www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade/)

TMO Europe: 4.2.1.101
TMO-Europe-Upgrade Service: BB Upgrade EU TMO (http://updateservice.t-mobile.net/blackberry/download/) (chose first the location, e.g. UK, then klick "Free download area")

Both are official and approved versions by TMO. Don't worry to use the latest TMO version.

Hope that helps - have fun.

Hrm. I wonder what's been updated for the new release?

Will jibi's modified .alx files work with the new os?

Here are the release notes:

Hello All,

new to this forum...

Anyway, downloaded the new firmware, loaded it...
But, do not see a list of changes? Is there a CHANGELOG anywhere?

Also, I loaded it on my 8800, and under info it still shows:
4.2.1.68 (platform 2.3.0.54)

I am using Vodafone, The Netherlands.

Furthermore, my BBMaps icon is now gone.
I tried loading the ALX's posted on that other post, but get a message that they are not compatible with my device??

Please advise.

Leonard,
There is no change log for the new OS's. The carriers rarely release that info.

As far as your 8800, how long did it take to load the OS? It should take 20 minutes or more. If it went right through and was done in a few seconds then the OS didn't load. Make sure you delete the vendor.xml file and try loading it again.

As far as BBMaps, just make sure you check the BBMaps box when you load the OS and it should be there.

For the .alx's on "that other post" that is a little more indepth than simply using the "add" feature in application loader to "load" them. You have to replace your Blackberry.alx and/or LBS.alx files with the ones in the thread and then run through application loader. They will load their respective programs automatically. Read the instructions in that thread and it will become a little more clear.

It indeed did not take that long.
I installed the setup.exe, then it executed the desktop manager.
It ran an update which took like 1 minute...

How do I update it then?...

I've updated my blackberries several times with no problem, so I have a pretty good idea of how to do it, but now the vendor.xml file and even apploader is missing. When I go into c:\program files\common files\research in motion there is no apploader but just one named blackberry, if i go into it i find Documentation, Connectors, Data Migration, Pumatech Desktop setup, Action Engine, Transaction Manager and Template. Where has apploader went? I did a search on C:\ for apploader and vendor.xml and none were found.

This is my first upgrade after installing DTM 4.2.2 SP2, does this has something to do? Are files now stored somewhere else?

You need to install the OS to the PC, as well. Then the vendor.xml and all the appropriate folders will be installed.

Thanks John for your quick reply. I've downloaded, then installed the OS in the PC (just as I have done many times in the past), but now no vendor.xml nor apploader appear, yet if I run DTM, and run applications loader, the new OS appears. Obviously, need to delette vendor.xml before installing or it will not run.

Thanks for your help.

I loaded the T-Mobile 101 version and experienced the call dropping issue. Downgraded to Rogers and the problem resolved.

I had an "uncaught exception" error that had my 8800 locked up hard. Even a reset wouldn't cure it as the minute it restarted the uncaught exception popped right back up. I wiped it with JL Commander and installed the Vodafone 4.2.1.101 OS version. I also added the modified .ALX file and now I have a boatload of themes. No issues at all with the new OS. No dropped calls, signal issues, or errors. This sucker is hummin' along like a finely crafted Swiss watch!
