When trying to login to AIM through my 8830 on Sprint, I get a message of:

"please visit www.blackberry.com/aim to activate your handheld for AOL Instant Messenger."

I go to that site, but it doesn't give any option to activate the handheld for that service, only to download the program all over again.

Anyone else having this problem?

BTW, this program is free through the sprint store.

Two things to try.

First, on your BlackBerry, go to ( Settings/Tools --> ) Options --> Advanced Options --> Host Routing Table. Click the Menu button and select Register Now. You'll get a message that the request was sent, and then receive an email with the subject Registration. Now try it.

If that doesn't fix it, go to the Sprint BIS site (https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=sprint), (create an account if you haven't already), then click Service Books on the left, then click the Send Service Books button. You should get the necessary service book at that point.

If you don't, you'll have to contact Sprint customer support!

As a side note, AIM on the Sprint 8830 has a glitch. When installed, the phone does not ring or vibrate when getting texts or calls. You only get a screen flash. Once I uninstalled the program, the phone went back to normal.

Spend the money and get JiveTalk. Great app and you can use all the common IM systems with one app. Well worth the one time $20 it costs.

I also recommend yak-on (http://www.yak-on.com), same cost, $20.

I second that, JiveTalk is the best IM program that I've ever used! So simple to set up, and they give you a 30 day trial period! (y)

By free you must mean $2.99/month:

what he said. I just moved over from yak on to jive talk. It is bad ass. I spent $30 for the user license instead of the device license.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I was doing a search for AIM on the 8830 and came across this thread. I just loaded AIM onto my 8830 (Sprint) since I'm going to get rid of my Treo 755p (which I currently use AIM on that but the 8830 just kicks the 755p's ass in every way, except for using my Slingbox). I loaded and installed AIM from blackberry.com/aim (today's date, approx 2 months after the quote I'm replying to), and I just tested the phone calling and text messaging with AIM running. It works fine where I can hear my ringer on incoming calls and with txt messages or Exchange email from the BES, I still get the msg notifications still playing (or vibrating when I have it set to vibrate mode) so if there was a glitch, I think they might have fixed it with an updated version of AOL AIM on Blackberry's website. Just and FYI.
