8820 on T-Mobile

Has anyone gotten the 8820 to work on T-Mobile? I've seen threads of the 8320 working on ATT but not the 8820 on T-Mobile. Just trying to determine if everything works fine.. WiFi/GPS,etc.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. I wouldn't bet on having UMA but all else should work.

Where do you get the 8820? Tmo doesn't sell the device - only the 8800. Are folks buying the unlocked 8820 from ATTM (or elsewhere?) and putting a Tmo SIM in the unlocked phone from ATT?

Yes, the 8820 is available from AT&T. You would need to have it unlocked by AT&T or a 3rd party unlocking service.

Thats what I want to do... just want to make sure everything works fine.. I would rather have the gps/wifi 8820 over the wifi/camera 8320.

You'll have to wait for someone smarter than me on that one. I don't have an answer. The UMA is part of TMo's service and it may not support the 8820. I guess we wait until someone actually tries it.

I have an unlocked 8820 running on TMo. All works well with the exception of UMA. There are a variety of posts relating to people working with RIM and TMo to get it to work. There is more to getting UMA to work on the device than Service Books. I have all the TMo Service Books but still no UMA.

The good news is that all other functions work very well on the 8820 using TMo.

So no voice call's over Wi-Fi or is it just the hand-off between Wi-Fi and the T-Mo cell network that is not working?

I do not think some of the T-Mo features will work till they get their own 8820 introduced and have their features up and running. All other features should work well!

Appears there might possibly a certificate (among other components) that is missing on the 8820 to get the UMA/GAN features to work. This is something that TMo is working on with no estimated release date specified. I would expect that since the 8320 has this feature in service that TMo's infrastructure is basically ready for the device. Various discussions with TMo today indicate it will come in the future..again no date specified.

Well let me know if you here anything. Still trying to make up my mind if I want to wait until the 8820 works on T-Mo or just get 8320 and use a GPS puck

I tried the Orange 8820 OS before the AT&T software was released. It had the same limitations with respect to UMA not being available.

hmm blackberry.alx or device.hml if you could mod that or get the seetings for the 8320 you could use thos settings to hac the 8820 to run tmos UMA service i would just need the app to mod th alx files without changing the extension.

However, a good hacker would know that the .alx file just requires a simple text editor to edit. You can use wordpad or the text editor of your choice. However, editing that stuff isn't going to give you UMA on the 8820. It has to be allowed at the TMo server level.

In brief discussions, TMo has indicated that UMA is not a only a function of these components. There appears to be a some hardware modifications and a UMA/GAN certificate that will need to be loaded into the 8820. In all honesty, they could be just saying this as a deterrent to prevent one from trying the hack.

not quite tru theose apps try to sav them as a the native extension a word pad document .txt and ive rie tm bot after trying to mod the alx files.

hmm o wonder if you culd mod the device flags to make the tmo server think its an 8320?

Galv, I have edited hundreds of .alx files. I simply edit them with wordpad in Windows. It's not rocket science.
