Help a noob! I can't enter numbers to call out?

Don't know what I did, but I cannot dial numbers from the main screen only autodials. If I go into the call log screen and try to type in a number it's letters. I know its something easy, but nothing in the user guide on this? Please help.:oops:

go into your phone, go to options and general options, chane dial from home screen to yes.

Pulled the battery and now it works fine. What causes this? A glitch in the software or me doing something dumb?
