It appears that US TMO has just posted their newest 8700g handheld 4.2.1.107 and desktop 4.2.2.14 (without Media Manager) software today, 2007 Oct 1.

The product version on the installer file is 4.2.1.107A/2.3.0.84P

This OS can be loaded on ANY carrier's GSM 8700 Blackberry.

Direct links to download:

8700g Handheld OS Upgrade (http://tmobile.infospace.com/tmweb/(euq0pm45ovwipmmtslv1jb45)/app/DownloadCenter/DeviceDownloads.aspx?deviceID=22)

Instructions for installing:
This OS will work on any GSM/GPRS/EDGE 8700c/g/v/f/r

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. It's 4.2 SP2 and can be downloaded from the link above or Click Here. (http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/req_4dot2_sp2.jsp;jsessionid=E4D2C95203F66001DB33DFCEF160F90F)
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

I upgraded, like the new OS, it works faster and looks better. Ring volume seems lower than before, but it is still loud enough for me.

Upgrade mostly worked but for a few little glitches, which are
1) Operamini no longer works, error messages says it is unable to connect to the internet. But I can use the regular BB browser. Removing and reinstalling operamini didn't help.

2) BB screen now blacks out after 30 seconds, previously it never blacked out. Can this be reset?

Any help in resolving these issues would be appreciated.

Okay, stupid question:

The earlier TMO OS I was using on my 8700 (4.2.97, I think) allowed/enabled Media Manager. New OS does not APPEAR to support Media Manager, but my 8700's folders are still intact.

How do I manage those media files and folders now?

Where do you live? You've likely been roaming on AT&T forever, just the main screen didn't show it. Software upgrades include changes to the software that names the networks. What you're seeing is normal. If it says AT&T and EDGE, you are fine.

lsilent
10-02-2007, 10:02 PM
i live in santa rosa ca.. i never had any roaming charges. it always said that it was TMO.. but now it At&T

i also had my sim cand in the phone and now i can connect to use my phone..

John Clark

It's normal. Nothing changed except the name displayed on the home screen. Before you upgraded if you would have looked in Options >Network you would have seen AT&T even though it said TMobile on the home screen. It's normal.

Do a manual search for networks under Options >Mobile Network. You'll probably find that TMobile doesn't even come up in the search.

Are you able to make calls with AT&T on the main screen?

lsilent

There's nothing that's obvious to the user. Mostly bug fixes. Also, with .107 it's shouldn't be necessary to have a data plan to get the Instant Messenger app to work. That was their big hype with .107 for the Pearl a while back.

One of the reasons that I've finally upgraded to 4.2 was the ability to play wav file attachments in emails. This is attractive since I get my business voicemails as wav files via email.

When playing these files, however, it is only possible to play them over the speakerphone speaker or through the integrated handset ear speaker, not through my Plantronics bluetooth headset. Or at least I can't as far as I can figure out.

Any suggestions (or wait for the next big upgrade)?

(Or do I need to look into editing the .alx file to still be able to use this theme?)

Answering my own question -- unfortunately, according to this other thread (http://www.blackberryforums.com/media-center/72988-loading-themes-8700-running-4-2-a.html), Insight-Icon does not work on 4.2 even if you manually load it.

I wrote to t-mobile asking how I can download the prior version to re-install. Only the latest is available on t-mobile.com/bbupgrade

You'll need to download it from another carrier. Use the link below and just search through the differnet GSM carriers until you find the version you want.

BlackBerry Operating System Downloads - BlackBerryFAQ (http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/BlackBerry_Operating_System_Downloads)

When you find it, do the following.

Remove the .107 version by going to Control Panel >Add/Remove programs.

Then download and install the old version. Delete the vendor.xml file and then plug the bb in and run Desktop Manager/Application Loader. Application Loader will state that a downgrade is going to take place.

The previous 4.2 from Tmo lagged a little for me, but this latest is as fast or faster than any before, for me. For what it's worth, I'm using the Zen theme. I typically have Yahoo messenger running all the time.

crap. im downgrading again. i would rather get punched in the nads every morning than be stuck with this retarded half list half icon zen theme. the ONLY reason i gave this 4.2 upgrade another chance is for the FREE bluetooth mac tethering (unlike the lame excuse for a solution with Pulse).

a few issues that I discovered after the upgrade:

much slower then 4.1, even after removal of all the extra crap like language support, mds runtime, brickbraker - leaving only core 4.2 apps on a device fills extremely heavy, any theme with "today" screen lags big time, theme with icons only works a bit faster. Browser much slower then on 4.1
While in Google maps or BBMaps gps tracking mode, the handheld will lock it self (after expiration of password time-out) - renders gps useless if you have password on a device. Haven't used gps heavily, but with-in last 4 days device rebooted twice while in Google maps
The new profile selection menu (on click of left button) is extremely slow, it takes literally 1.5-2 seconds to appear after first click.
Thsi OS is certainly overkill for 8700, not enough processor power to run it. Will downgrade it back to 4.1

You have to resend the service books. Logon to My Tmobile, when you logon, look on the main page towards the bottom and click the link that says, "Setup Blackberry Email". On the email setup page, on the left, click the "Service Books" link. On the next page, click the pink outlined button that says, "Send Service Books".

In about ten seconds you should get new emails on your blackberry saying your handheld has been registered and then you should see the browser icon.
