Default Hands on review: Seidio 8700c Swivel Clip Holster - 04-06-2006, 02:20 PM

Seidio Swivel Clip Holster

Hands on review by lgreenberg

April 6, 2006

Price as reviewed $29.95

We’ve all read the threads on Blackberry Forums. “My Blackberry Took a Fall” “I can’t stand the OEM holster” or something similar. Too many people have posted about the awful experience of watching their precious Blackberry 8700 fall to the ground because it somehow got ejected from the OEM holster. Personally I never had this happen to me but I was always a little nervous when using the included holster and often times found myself checking to make sure my 8700 was properly seated in the holster.

Enter Seidio. Sedio has released its Swivel Clip Holster for the Blackberry 8700c. And it’s a welcome addition.

The holster comes wrapped in plastic.

Included along with the holster is a sheet with instructions on how one should properly insert the 8700 into the holster but more on that later.

The inside of the holster is completely lined with felt. No chance of the screen, bezel or keypad becoming scratched.

The Blackberry is meant to be carried face in.

The back of the holster contains a swivel clip.

This swivel clip is SUPER strong. One of my biggest complaints about the OEM holster and the OEM pouch is that the clip used often times moves positions by itself while on my belt. The Seidio clip almost locks itself in place. You hear a very distinct click when switching ratcheting positions. The clip has a total of 7 possible positions.

Another nice feature is the fact that the clip can’t be turned upside down. You can rotate the clip to 3 positions to the right or three positions to the left but not 360 degrees around.

Once inserted into the holster the pair makes for a very slim profile. The holster DOES have a built in sleeper magnet which functions perfectly.

All of the buttons and ports are completely accessible.

The included instructions tell you to first insert the device into the bottom at an angle.

Then, after the bottom is situated, to lift the spring clip up and push it into place. It is possible to insert and remove the 8700 into the holster with only one hand.

You definetly get the feeling that the 8700 isn’t going anywhere once it’s properly locked in. The Blackberry stays securely in place with the top, bottom, and lower sides all held in.

To remove the 8700 from the holster you simply reverse the process, first lifting up on the clip and then removing the device.

On one’s belt the holster offers a very slim profile. The clip is long enough to handle most belts. I was wearing a 1-1/2” wide belt at the time of this review.

I know one thing that's going to be on everyone's mind. Will the top part of the holster scratch my device? Seidio has take a step to insure that does not happen. They've installed a small piece of rubber under the spring clip to prevent any damage to the device.

The holster works with both the regular and extended batteries.

Regular

Extended

Here are some comparison shots with the OEM holster.

This one gets my best rating. 5/5 Blackberries.

If you like the OEM holster but don't trust it this is the carrying accessory for you.

Pros: Super strong swivel clip, built in sleeper magnet, felt lined, secure, one handed operation.
Cons: Battery door left exposed.

Excellent! This is the one I have been waiting for. I have one on the way to me from the company for review as well, and I can't wait. I feel sure I will come to the same conclusions as you did. Gotta love the 5/5 BlackBerries rating, you know it's a keeper!

For those who already read the review I just updated it with a picture and a blurb about the rubber piece which is under the top of the clip to prevent scratching.

Very cool feature.

I noticed I got rub marks and even paint coming off my 7290 in it's OEM plastic case. That case had clips that engaged in the BB screw holes to hold the BB in place.

Can you see this happening with the Seidio product (without egrips)? For example, the clip forever rubbing on the top of the BB...

Not sure if you were typing your question at the same time I made mention of my addition above or just missed it.

know one thing that's going to be on everyone's mind. Will the top part of the holster scratch my device? Seidio has take a step to insure that does not happen. They've installed a small piece of rubber under the spring clip to prevent any damage to the device.

If you're worried about it I suggest installing a set of The Best Skins Ever. I have a set on and they protect the top where the clip hits.

They only offer Priority Mail and Fedex shipping. $ 9 to ship the case is 1/3 of the cost- no option to make it lower. That stinks, I have a case and don't need it rushed it just seems like alot of money to ship.

I like the case but these types of things are luxuries and it is easier to pull the trigger on a purchase @ $30 instead of $40.

I will probably get it anyway but you would think they would at least offer USPS ground service as an option.

PS- Thanks for the great review Lgreenberg!

John,

They probably only want to ship via a way that's trackable in case a customer claims an item is lost.

That I completely understand. That being said $9 seems very high to ship one holster USPS Priorirty. In my experience it should be about half that for an item that small.

Perhaps David from Seidio can offer some insight here.

United States Postal Service Shipping Options:
Shipping Method Price

Priority Mail $8.42

That was the least expensive option- Fedex was, obviously, higher.

Great! $5 off makes a nice little dent in the shipping charge (my only reservation with this purchase). Now, if I could only get my unlock code already.

The discount is a great idea definately helps with the hefty shipping charge. I pulled the trigger and placed the order.

The discount code did not work though...I have PM'd David @ Seidio and I will see what happened.

Nice that they support the forums and thanks lgreenbergh as always!

Arrow Question for lgreenberg - 04-07-2006, 11:16 PM

Hi lgreenberg,
First Visa and I would like to thank you for your reviews, both helpful and informative.
I always wear my 8700 clipped inside my pant pocket with the OEM holster. Is it easy to get the blackberry out one handed if you were to wear it this way with the Seidio? (Seems like it might be awkward)
I already have the Forte STI vertical pouch + the Egrips + “best skins ever” on order but would be willing to order this as well due to the extra protection and low profile.... err one can't be to careful.. my first 8700 took a spill from inside my pocket, landed on my front porch, came out of the OEM holster and the screen cracked..

Chiba
