Default Spell Checkers - 04-19-2006, 12:11 PM

Some people don't like making spelling mistakes so here are two solutions for you.

You can either choose a free application bbCorrector or pay an annual license fee for bbSpell (if you order enter “Stinson” as a coupon code to save $10 on your order). Both are good applications, and if spelling is important to you, I suggest you go with bbSpell. bbCorrector does a fundamental job of checking the spelling, but is far more trackwheel intensive. bbSpell has been redesigned with my input to avoid trackwheel clicks once the correction process starts, until you are ready to accept the changes or send the email. For bbCorrector, each correction requires the use of the trackwheel. Here are some reasons to pay for bbSpell. If you are not sure, try the free evaluation version of bbSpell.

· Usability - bbSpell automates the checking process with popup menus that allow you move quickly through the process.

· Quality - bbCorrector has had a major update. There are two hero's in the community, T-Roy and Tateu from Blackberry forums that are doing most of the work. bbSpell has paying customers so they fix their problems quickly, and they offer support.

· Performance - bbSpell claims to return corrections faster than any BB spelling product - device or server based. Clearly users on a BES get faster results. The program adds three menu items: Check Spelling, Thesaurus, and Dictionary to your email compose menu.

Other advantages to bbSpell that may warrant the cost:

· Thesaurus lookups during message composition

· Full definition lookups

· Legal and Medical Dictionaries

· Localized in French and German

· SSL support

· English (US, UK, CAN), Spanish, French, German dictionaries with seamless UI integration for multi-language use.

· Enterprise edition which keeps all spelling traffic within the corporate network, and allows for a shared corporate dictionary

When you choose Check Spelling from the trackwheel, the spell checking starts and you get the screen above. Note the word being checked at the top, and then the list of possible spellings. When you select the corrected word (either scrolling to it, or beginning to type it -followed by the enter key), the program pops up the next misspelled word. After the final word, the Send selection is made, but you can change that to Accept and return to the email compose screen and make further adjustments before you send the email. All of this goes very quickly and is relatively automated. The example above is a good reason you might need to use Accept. Note the word, chucker. The word is not misspelled but it should be "checker," so you will have to manually fix it before sending your email.
