Default REVIEW: BlackBerry 8700c/r/g USB Sync Cradle + extra AC Charger - 04-21-2006, 11:38 PM

Product: BlackBerry 8700c/r/g USB Sync Cradle + extra AC Charger
Price: $59.95, Spring Sale $39.95 (You Save 33%)
URL: http://www.wirelessground.com/bl87cr.html

UPDATE: For a discount, www.WirelessGround.com had a coupon code created, the code is "blackberryforums." The discount is for 15 percent off the order total, no minimum purchase required.

Review:
Everything comes in a large ziploc type of bag, as shown:

Inside are the cradle, attached to a USB jack for your PC/Mac, with a small coiled USB cable to insert into your device, and an additional USB charging cable for use as a backup for the OEM cable supplied by RIM - nice to have a backup, especially for travellers:

The device fits in nicely, and even fits with the Seidio Premium Skin for 8700c/8700r on it, and the cradle has a blue power indicator light as well:

There are four rubber pads on the bottom to prevent slippage on a smooth surface.

Pros: Perfect fit, even with the Seidio skin on the BB, additional charging cable included, nicely places device facing you on your desk.

Cons: Expensive (not bad with the current discount!).

Conclusion: I can't imagine a better way to build a cradle for a device which requires the cable to connect on the side as opposed to the bottom of the BB.

Does the 8700 actually lock into this cradle? Or is just just sitting there and could be knocked right out?

The OEM RIM desktop stand for the 72xx I'm using is that way (just sits there) and I just don't see the need to switch if this cradle doesn't offer the secure mount I thought it would.

Any concerns about using an aftermarket charger? I beleive it was rcg who initially raised some.

It does not lock in, but that would be nice. It has a little lip across the bottom of the front of the device, to keep it in place, but it certainly is not solidly settled in there. As for the charger, it worked well on my tests, so I don't know about any issues. What kinds of problems was he talking about, and what could happen?

There always seem to be warnings about charging your device with non OEM chargers. I guess the worry is you'll damage the battery or the device itself.

That's too bad it doesn't securely look the device in. I'm not sure than why they call it a 8700 series specific accessory then.

I want to purchase this product but I have a question before i do. If i recieve a message and my phone vibrates, will it still stay inside the stand even though it dosent lock into place. I would hate to have to keep placing it back everytime i get a message.

Mine does not pop out. The vibration is not strong enough to make that happen in my experience thus far.

Don't think so. Seidio is working on one like this that will accomodate the extended battery. It should be ready pretty soon.

The current Seidio cradle will not work with the extended battery. Are they making another one which will?

Will the newer one work with both or only the extended?

- It comes with

cradle
USB cable

In the back, there are two ports

- one miniUSB port which you can use the included cable to plug into your computer.
- One charging port which you can plug the travel charger onto it. The travel charger can continue to charge 8700 even the computer is turned off. The travel charger is optional. Seidio also carries that.

David contacted me about this, here is our email exchange:

Quote:
Marc,
How popular is the extended battery for 8700? If it is, we may want to develop another cradle that allows the extended battery. Please let me know your feedbacks.

David,
The extended battery is quite popular, I have seen lots of people getting them. I wonder if you could make a bigger cradle and market it as made for either a bare 8700 with an extended battery, OR an 8700 with a standard battery while in a skin or case? That might draw attention from more members, what do you think?

Hi Marc,
Thank you very much for the input. We are working on a cradle which can take both standard and extended battery. Will keep you informed.

David

Me thinks they should announce this to the general forums.

I'm guessing there's going to be a few angry people who've purchased the current cradle only to find out another is released which works with both the regular and extended batteries.
