Default BES EX 414 MDS Connection Service - do we need it?

Please Login to Remove!

Is there any quick test on the handheld end to tell whether the BlackBerry MDS Connection service is actually doing anything? We are not quite sure we're using it, but we don't want to disable it until we're sure.

Everything else is working fine, just on general principles I personally would like to not have services running that aren't needed. It definitely complicates the Disaster Recovery strategy.

In the same vein, can we comb the logs throughout the enterprise (we have around ten at this point, in separate databases) would it tell us whether anything is happening under the MDS Connection service?

Default

Are your BlackBerry devices using any web browsing on their devices using the BlackBerry browser? That uses MDS.

Do they access any internal network resources on your LAN via the BlackBerry?
That uses MDS.

MDS is used for many purposes and is one of the key features of BES.
I would imagine you're using it.

Default A Test for MDS - point BB Browser to local Intranet!

It was as simple as starting BlackBerry Browser and pointing to our local Intranet home page. It works, when the service is up; when the service is down, you get an error message "Unable to connect to the selected Mobile Data Service, please try again later." Many thanks for the good info.
