Default Need to proactively monitor pending count on BES 4 Domino

Please Login to Remove!

We are searching for a utility or monitoring software that will alert us when certain users pending count on our BES 4 for Domino reach a specified level.

Essentially we want to get paged if our VIP's have pending messages for more than a few minutes.

Do you know of any utilities that will do this?

Thanks.

I don't know of any off-the-shelf utilities for that, but if you have any developers at your site, the information is easy enough to pull out of MSDE or SQL.

We're poking around in the BESMgmtdatabase over here: BerryStats for NonAdmins

I use the "lite" page to keep tabs on certain VIPs. It could be desktop items or links to view on your berry. To get you exactly what you wanted though, I would recommend a VB App that runs on the BES and monitors the tables on a preset interval. You should be able to get the info you need for the SQL stuff from our other thread.

I know total messages pending is a configurable SNMP trap. I'm pretty sure users can be monitored via besUserHealthMsgPending.

You'll need to find your blackberryserver.mib file.

I use BMC Solftware's Performance Manager a.k.a. Patrol for the monitoring and alerting of thresholds we set.

You should be able to use any MIB browser at least to see if the data points are there that you want to use.

Could you explain how you use Patrol to monitor your BES? We are using Patrol just to monitor whether the server is up or down, and also to restart certain services, but I've never tried to monitor somthing specific. I'm most intersted in monitoring pending message count or possibly some specific console lines to determine whether or not everything is working as it should be.

The SNMP settings are in the Maintenance Guide PDF. I'm sure they have a premade MIB for BES 4.0 (there is a 3.6 version available on the net). Or you could just write a script that checked the status of the MsgsPending column in the UserStats table and parse it correctly (not sure on how to do this) or the same column in the ServerStats table (overall Pending count) and parse for each server you have.

Are you using the traditional Patrol or do you have access to Patrol Express? I think the limitation with traditional patrol, MOM, NetIQ, Bindview and other tools like that are that they only intergrate the performance monitoring API's of the Perfmon counters into their enterprise consoles. The Blackberry mib which can be loaded with your patrol Express console and fed into your PIM opens a lot more posiblities. The Blackberry mib gives you about 10 times the monitoring compared to perfmon, but it also gives you granulatiry down to the user level.

To get an idea of what you can monitor with the Blackberry mib, down load something like iReasonings MIB browser and drill into your BES with it. You have to be running SNMP (not SMTP) on your server to access the Blackberry MIB.

I attached a screen shot out of my Patrol Express console. I'm logging about 10 things, but only alert on SRP connectState and totalMesgsecvdPerMin. I found that if the totalMesgsecvdPerMin drops below 1 for more than 15 minutes, there is some sort of problem with my server and I get an alert via pager.
