Default Calling Web Services from Blackberry Apps

Please Login to Remove!

I'm working on creating an application that can access information on a server which requires login credentials. After logging into the application, I want to access the information on the server via an available web service. The information I am trying to acces isn't necessarily behind the same firewall as the BES servers. I'm curious how the application (presumably an MDS application) makes the web service calls and the path the call takes over the air and what role the BES takes in passing the information.
Does the MDS app make the call and the BES then passes the request to and from the web service or can the MDS application go directly to the web service? Can someone explain the architecture here and generally how a Blackberry application can get information from a web service? I appreciate the help.
