Default MS SQL Database Maintenance Plan

Please Login to Remove!

Just curious as to what you all have for the specifics of your database maintenance plan. If I knew a lot more about MS SQL, I probably wouldn't need to even ask this, but unfortunately my knowledge lies solely with MySQL (and even then, its fairly limited).

I know I need to backup the BESMgmt database, in addition to the master database. Should I backup the msdb and model databases as well?

Optimization:
- Reorganize data and index pages: Yes/No
o Reorganize pages with the original amount of space
o Change free space per page percentage to: __ (Default: 10)
- Update statistics used by query optimizer: Yes/No
- Remove unused space from database files: Yes/No
-- __ % of the database
-- When it grows beyond: __ MB
Schedule: weekly or daily?

Integrity:
- Check database integrity
o Include indexes
-- Attempt to repair any minor problems: Yes/No
o Exclude indexes
- Perform these checks before doing backups: Yes/No
Schedule: weekly or daily?

Backup (I've got this one, so I'll list my settings and suggest something different if needed):
- Back up the database as part of the maintenance plan: Yes
-- Verify the integrity of the backup when complete: Yes
o Disk
Schedule: Occurs every 1 day(s), at 12:00 AM.

Backup Disk Directory:
- Remove files older than 2 weeks

Transaction Log Backup:
- Back up the transaction log as part of the maintenance plan: Yes/No
-- Verify the integrity of the backup when complete: Yes/No

Reports:
- Write report to a text file in directory: Yes/No

History:
- Write history to the msdb.dbo.sysdbmaintplan_history tabel on this server: Yes/No
-- Limit rows in the table to ____ rows for this plan (Default: 1000)

Okay, I think that is all. This can serve as a 'best practices' type post. I've seen articles and guides that show 'Yes' and 'No' answers, but no specific answers as to what should and should not be checked. The above information is step-by-step through the wizard. Any suggestions or information would be appreciated.

I normally dont mess with the optimis part (dont know enough about it and the db is small anyways)

You want backup of model and msdb also , they are not critical for BES since everything in them can be recreated (roles/users) , but might as well back them up since it will save you some time in a total crash

history/report is for audit always nice to have a paper trail of what went on backup wise.
